We bought these a couple of months ago. Haven't tried grating into the bowl, but if I had to guess, you would need to hold it steady because of the relatively narrow base compared to the height. As long as it is steadied, it should stay in play as the bottoms are very grippy. On our quartz counters, there is zero slip.
