The M5 MacBook Air deal centers on a strong Best Buy trade in promo that can cut the upgrade price sharply, especially for M1 through M3 MacBooks. The best results come from adding the M5 to cart first and checking trade in at checkout, where some M1 and M2 machines show totals around $350 to $525, with tax refunds sometimes improving the net even more. The main catch is that the advertised extra value is easy to misread, since the bonus appears to be about $150, not a flat $200, and eligibility can vary by model, RAM, condition, and location. It is a compelling upgrade path if your current MacBook still has trade in value left.
M1 MacBook Air owners who want a low-effort upgrade and are okay doing the trade-in through Best Buy because commenters say the cart/checkout flow can surface the higher trade-in (e.g., $350 shown when adding the M1 at checkout) and store pickup/trade-in can be smoother than shipping.
people trading in an eligible older MacBook (like an M1 Air) specifically to buy an M5-series MacBook Air/Pro at Best Buy because the extra trade-in credit is tied to the M5-series promo and can show up as a higher trade-in amount when you check trade-in value at checkout.
buyers who are upgrading to double RAM/storage and want the deal to effectively "pay for" the spec bump because commenters describe the trade-in + sale math as making the upgrade feel worth it (e.g., double RAM/storage plus warranty/AppleCare for an effective cost around the $525-$680 range after tax/refund).
people who can price match the M5 sale price (e.g., to Amazon) and then apply the trade-in promo because at least one commenter reports stacking price match + trade-in promo to reach a much lower effective price.
M2 Air owners who use the laptop daily and want a straightforward trade-in path because one commenter said the upgrade looked like a deal at about $629 before tax if they were using the laptop every day.
buyers expecting the "+$200" trade-in to always show up as advertised because multiple commenters say they only saw $150 bonus (and not $200), or that the net increase was much smaller (like +$50) after cart adjustments.
buyers whose exact RAM/storage config isn't offered in Best Buy's trade-in lookup because commenters report friction like no option for 16GB M1 Air on the guided search or trade-in lookup failing for certain serial/configs.
people with an M4 MacBook Air (or configurations excluded by the promo terms) because commenters note the extra-trade promotion excludes M4 and that eligibility is limited to certain chip generations/models.
Intel MacBook owners (e.g., Intel 2020 MBP) because one commenter said their Intel 2020 MBP got no bonus and was only worth about $100 trade-in, making the deal not worthwhile.
people considering trading a still-usable M1 MacBook Pro if the upgrade would be a downgrade in screen/speakers for their needs because one commenter argued they wouldn't make the trade since the M5 Air would have a smaller, lower-quality screen and speakers than their current setup.
The advertised extra $200 trade-in value often does not appear in the trade-in calculator, showing only $150 off and different trade-in credit amounts.
The extra trade-in value applies only when buying an M5 MacBook Air or M5-series MacBook Pro and trading in an eligible MacBook Air or MacBook Pro with an M1, M2, or M3 chip. M4 models are excluded, and some 16GB custom configurations may not appear in Best Buy's guided trade-in lookup.
No. The promo shown in the comments is an additional $150 trade-in value for eligible M1-M3 MacBooks when buying an M5 MacBook Air or Pro, and several trade-in quotes only show the normal value plus that bonus. The "$200" figure appears to come from specific cart math or a separate trade-in estimate, not a universal bonus.
The trade-in promo is applied after tax on the trade-in portion, while tax is still calculated on the full retail price of the new MacBook. Several comments note that Best Buy also refunds the tax difference, which can make the effective out-of-pocket cost lower than the headline price.
Yes. For a 2020 M1 Air, Best Buy quotes around $350 to $400 in some cases, while Apple EDU or Apple trade-in quotes can be higher, such as about $816 versus roughly $650 at Best Buy after tax effects. The better choice depends on the exact model, condition, and whether you value the Best Buy sale price more than the trade-in payout.
Add the M5 MacBook Air to cart first, then use checkout's trade-in flow and enter the M1 there; that path can show the higher promo value. The trade-in page by itself may show a lower estimate, and store pickup with in-store trade-in seems to preserve the best estimate better than mail-in.
Is it a M1 Air or M1 MBP? I have a 2020 m1 MacBook Pro and it still works well but I'd get $425 trade in making the M5 Air price $525 after sale/trade to go from M1 to newest M5 chip, double my 8g ram to 16, double my 256 hd to 512 and get very slightly larger screen, newer better battery and 1 yr AppleCare (assuming new Macs still get that?) Wasn't even shopping for a new laptop but since mine is 6 yrs old I'm starting to talk myself into it. On another rebuy site I got a quote of round $217 for my computer so getting almost double trade value plus the extra sale discount makes it hard to think I'd get a better deal on a M5 without waiting like 3 yrs and my trade will only go down over time, Interested to hear other opposing opinions though....
Does Best Buy do this type of sale with extra trade value every year or is this a new deal? Think a similar sale will happen next year on the m6?? I could see my M1 for a year but if this is a one-off special sale makes it seem more worth puling the trigger
It's a Macbook m1 with 1 full year of apple care. I bought it off VIP outlet which was a dented box from walmart 2 months ago for $325
Nope. Most people feel the need to "keep up with the joneses" -- always upgrading to the latest bauble or trinket, instead of wearing out what they have. Or using it until it no longer meets their needs.
The M1 CPU is perfectly fine for most casual use -- because it's almost the same as the Macbook Neo's phone chip processor. And people are gushing over that machine.
The M1 series of processors are still being supported by Apple, with no End-of-Life date yet set. And once that date comes and goes, it's not like the machine magically stops working...you just stop getting updates. Unless some catastrophic exploit is revealed, you'll probably be fine using the machine for at least several years past EoL.
That's why I'm leaning towards keeping... still on fence
I have an M1 MacBook Pro 16 inch screen 512gb, I said the same thing everything works perfectly fine, I would go for it if it were the 14-15 inch M5 trade in just to see it was 550 for my M1, I wonder if Apple would give more but paying still 1100 after trade in doesn't seem worth it all the way- good deal but not insane deal. Still solid.
I check the trade in value on my 15" M3 air and it was $750 a few weeks ago on BB website. Now its showing $800 a $50 increase in trade in value...
Not +$200
If it went up to $950 trade in value I'd seriously consider upgrading. but only an extra $50? its better than nothing but not $200 like the title states.

I am in the same situation and I have zero need to replace my 2020 13" M1 Macbook Pro, but after thinking about it this morning I went ahead and placed the order. Double the RAM, double the storage, warranty, etc. for $525 seems worth it to me. Plus, I bought my used M1 13" MBP for much less than the $425 trade in value so that helps.
You should always check Apple edu store and price your trade in there. I recently upgraded my son's m2 air and Apple gave me $370 toward it and the m5 was $999 in the edu store, then 0% financing on the balance and 3% cash back. No brainer.
now I see what they did after adding everything to cart.
They reduced the original trade in value by $100 ($750 a few weeks ago $650 now) then "added" the $150 so its a net of $50 from the previous trade in value.
rascals.

Too bad my Intel 2020 MBP doesn't get any bonus! Only worth $100 trade in
I sold my 15" 2017 macbook pro when apple announced the M1 chips in November 2020
I sold it for $1200 on ebay before intel macbook values crashed.
it was only a matter of time before intel macs were undesireable.

Is edu trade in different from normal trade in? 285 for MacBook Air m1 vs 400 here
apple edu store shows $816 after trade for my 2020 13" m1, vs BB shows $677 (possible tax refund tax, making it ~$650). So, I guess it is a ~$150 diff. But, my m1 is still going strong w/ 8gb ram for my daily use. Wisdom tells me to not splurge.
Any one know the trade in value of M1 Macbook Air with 16GB RAM ? My M1 has 16Gb even when I put the serial number it does NOT show up in trade in specs.
The BestBuy trade in only have listing for 8GB RAM - 512GB SSD.
I guess if there is no other option I will stick with that option for trade in.
Great price if any one have old M1. My MBA still working good but the battery start degrading so for less than $650 for screen + battery and SSD up grade seem not bad at all.
I have a M1 MBA 8Gb/256GB. I wasn't looking to upgrade right now as my M1 still does the job for me but getting $350 on trade plus the sale price on the MBA M5 is making me seriously consider. I would think Apple will continue to support the M1 for at least a year or two longer. Obviously the trade in value will continue to decrease over time so does it make more sense to maximize its trade in value on a new system now or ride it out and hope to score a deal on a new MBA a couple years from now? I bought this M1 open box from Best Buy in 2021 for $675+tax so to be able to get almost half of the original price back on trade after using it for 5 years is intriguing. hmm, decisions, decisions

I have a custom M1 too with 16GB of ram. I ended up trading it into Apple for $250 (lower than the base M1 trade in at Best Buy for $350.) Due to it not being an off the shelf build, it can be tricky finding places that accept them. I ended up buying the M5 Air from Amazon (also $950) to stack on some Chase Freedom categories (5% back.) My wife's base M1 will go to Best Buy.
My M1 Air had been working pretty well relative to its age. My largest gripe with my M1 Air was that it doesn't support my work setup using two external monitors (fairly recently resolved with the M4 Air.) Other than that, I think being able to swap my heavily-used six yr old laptop with the latest (better display, new battery, more storage, faster everything) for around $600 is a deal, but everyone's value proposition is different.
