The M5 MacBook Air deal centers on a strong Best Buy trade in promo that can cut the upgrade price sharply, especially for M1 through M3 MacBooks. The best results come from adding the M5 to cart first and checking trade in at checkout, where some M1 and M2 machines show totals around $350 to $525, with tax refunds sometimes improving the net even more. The main catch is that the advertised extra value is easy to misread, since the bonus appears to be about $150, not a flat $200, and eligibility can vary by model, RAM, condition, and location. It is a compelling upgrade path if your current MacBook still has trade in value left.

  • The advertised extra $200 trade-in value often does not appear in the trade-in calculator, showing only $150 off and different trade-in credit amounts.

  • Eligibility for the extra trade-in credit is limited by specific M5-series models, eligible old MacBook chips, and condition or location requirements.

  • The promotion can fail to apply to certain configurations or product types, including open-box or refurb M5 models.

  • The trade-in values can be lower than other trade-in options, which can reduce the net benefit after comparing offers.

Man...this is pretty good deal. I traded in my custom M1 Air to Apple directly, but I have another one that I may use for this.

Can't replicate the extra $ for trade in. Shows value (either way) $550.00 for my M4 16/256.

2020 M1 base model is showing $150+$275. As mentioned above, sales tax gets added to the $375, which makes it an almost $400 refund.

If you click on the "See Details" it shows the breakdown. It's giving me a total of $525 for an M2 Macbook Air 16gb/256gb. Tax makes it more like $550 I think so that's not too bad.

Nope. Most people feel the need to "keep up with the joneses" -- always upgrading to the latest bauble or trinket, instead of wearing out what they have. Or using it until it no longer meets their needs.

The M1 CPU is perfectly fine for most casual use -- because it's almost the same as the Macbook Neo's phone chip processor. And people are gushing over that machine.

The M1 series of processors are still being supported by Apple, with no End-of-Life date yet set. And once that date comes and goes, it's not like the machine magically stops working...you just stop getting updates. Unless some catastrophic exploit is revealed, you'll probably be fine using the machine for at least several years past EoL.

Can you clarify what you're seeing? Based on the image in your screenshot - I don't see anything extra. $150 off the price of the M5 air (standard) and $350 in trade in credit for your M1 MB Air. BB's page says there is a $150 bonus credit, but again not seeing that in your screenshot.
Buying the M5 gives you added trade value when I was checking, plus the M5 sale discount is higher. A M4 Macbook was $999 AND $150 less trade ( for my M1 MBP 13) vs the M4 on Sale for $950 with $425 trade ($150 higher trade and better sale price comes to $200 less than a M4 to get the M5, not sure if that's what OP meant about extra $200 or not but the M5 is way better deal than M4. I'll probably keep my M1 for now but seems like a good deal if you need to upgrade.
When I switched item to the M4 this message popped up:
"Selecting a different product can affect your trade-in value. Review your new trade-in value before proceeding. Previous Est. Trade-in Value: $425.00 New Est. Trade-in Value: $275.00".

Is it a M1 Air or M1 MBP? I have a 2020 m1 MacBook Pro and it still works well but I'd get $425 trade in making the M5 Air price $525 after sale/trade to go from M1 to newest M5 chip, double my 8g ram to 16, double my 256 hd to 512 and get very slightly larger screen, newer better battery and 1 yr AppleCare (assuming new Macs still get that?) Wasn't even shopping for a new laptop but since mine is 6 yrs old I'm starting to talk myself into it. On another rebuy site I got a quote of round $217 for my computer so getting almost double trade value plus the extra sale discount makes it hard to think I'd get a better deal on a M5 without waiting like 3 yrs and my trade will only go down over time, Interested to hear other opposing opinions though....
Does Best Buy do this type of sale with extra trade value every year or is this a new deal? Think a similar sale will happen next year on the m6?? I could see my M1 for a year but if this is a one-off special sale makes it seem more worth puling the trigger

I saw the same thing for my M2 15" air 8gb/512gb. It's solid for a zero effort trade-in.

At $629 before tax to upgrade to the M5 model, it'd probably be a deal if I were using that laptop every day but I have a mac studio at my very comfortable desk.

The laptop is only used for video calls and ... watching jack vale fart videos with my mom lol. True story. Big Grin

Can someone please share experience trading in a cracked/broken screen Apple laptop?
Is it even possible to categorize cracked screen as "poor" condition trade in?

M4 is excluded. Says m1-m3 in the terms

Anyone sticking to the "people just want the latest" as a reason NOT to upgrade right now are flat out wrong.
We are about to see a supply shock that will make early COVID days of TP shortages seem cute. In my work I am already seeing this due to a combination of compute resources being unobtainable due to AI and now suppliers in Asia are closing facilities as energy shortages hit.
Now is an excellent time to lock in laptop upgrades if you are on the fence because prices by end of the year will be way higher than today.
