I've used J&J bandaids that were over a decade old without issues. They stuck like new. On the other side of the coin, if you really need a butterfly bandage instead of just a bandaid, you want to absolutely guarantee it is in prime condition. $4.00 a box every once in a while is good insurance that they will stick when you need them to.
