The recommended daily amount for people under 70 is 600 IU. The safe upper limit for long-term daily use is 4000 IU; my understanding is that 600-2000 IU would be a reasonable long-term daily dosage for adults based on that report.

One additional point to consider is that fat destroys the availability of vitamin D in your body... So for those of us with a bit too much extra weight hanging around, going up to even 3000-4000 IU/day would be valuable. Definitely consult a doctor for any supplement changes, especially with the fat-soluble stuff (D, E, A, K)!
