Does this do similar tricks to the gl iNet routers? Like VPN support out of the box, authentication portal for public hotspots, etc?

They said they do. But I'm guessing this is not OpenWRT.

Yes, there is a comparison chart on the page to the WiFi 7, the AX3000 model, and this AX1500 model. It has those features but is lacking some others of the higher priced cousins.

not to TC - but a new FCC Router ban has been announced, and even the media can't get a clear list of which models / manf. are on the hit list.

"Obviously, at this extremely early stage, the unaffected list is going to be massively shorter than the affected list"

I love TP-Link products, but just wanted to let folks know.

I paid $80 for this in February. I wanted to get the Ubiquiti UniFi Travel Router, but it's been out of stock pretty much since the day it was released.

This TP-Link model at $40-ish is amazing and would buy again.

EDIT: OOPS! Looks like I bought a different model for $80. TP-Link BE3600 Wi-Fi 7 Portable Travel Router TL-WR3602BE

Existing routers, of which this is one, are grandfathered in. It's not banned.

4.2 avg amazon rating is bad. A deal for some, but IMHO, I'm done buying poor products for a deal which ends up being a waste of money when it comes to total cost/hassle of ownership. Pass for me.

I have an older TP Link and sad I cant get openWRT on it b/c there's a number of creature features locked behind a subscription that wasn't mentioned needing a subscription when I purchased the thing.

While not banned, any existing non-US made routers (Basically every single one) will only get updates for 1 year. And Firmware updates for routers are a big deal, as that is the number one way they get hacked (not just using default passwords).

In related to this, I have the bigger brother of this unit: TP-Link Roam 6 AX3000. Used it on cruise ships, multiple hotels, and even generically while going over to another location that I needed to bring multiple devices with me. It has no issues with the captive portals, can clone macs if needed, all the normal jazz. I got the higher end version cause for some reason the lower end one requires more power. 9v vs 5v. I wanted to make sure that anywhere I took it, I did not have to have a dedicated power supply for it. Oh the lap at the hotel has a USB-A kewl that is going to be 5v for sure and can just hook in. Also while on ship, putting it in low power mode for lease heat and longer run time, rubber band this to a power bank and toss it in my daughters bag, and boom sharing the wifi all over the ship, not just in the state room.

I had this model. Poor connection as normal for this type of router. All portable ones are not good. Low speed and less frequently network name broadcasting.

That's a good point re firmware. However, only Netgear has an exemption at the present time, so any other brand is going to have the same issue. We'll see what happens to TP-Link. Their press about the covered list semeed to indicate that they weren't too concerned.

They only did the ban so the new NSA spyware rollout does not clash with the Chinese one. It is for your best experience, though with the bandwidth we have nowadays, I think both of them could have spied on you with plenty to spare. They should worry about data center storage instead, because that is in short supply.

Incidentally, if your "smart" fridge starts buzzing any time you say "trump", call your local field office for a prize.

This is a good price on a high-rated, secure router when using public wi-fi's. I ordered one to take advantage of the deal.
