It's "bad" if you're opposed to plastic. Personally, I try to avoid polyester when there are reasonable alternatives, but I have these on all of our pillows and think they're great. Our nicest pillows are latex, and others are solid and heavy viscoelastic polyurethane foam, neither of which can be machine washed or submerged. I could spot treat, but that doesn't really fix the issue of human dander accumulation. So in the case of pillows - and mattresses, since ours have a latex layer on top - I use quality covers to increase longevity and keep them cleaner.
That said, I mostly use Utopia brand, which is $13 for 4 with almost 47k+ reviews and 4.6 stars: https://www.amazon.com/Utopia-Bed...B09TRDT1K
They're not "noiseless" compared to an uncovered pillow, but it's not that big a deal. The biggest disadvantage of these covers is that they trap air when fully zippered and so they take a little while to "deflate" once you put your head on it. I keep mine half-zipped to avoid it.
Topping contains potassium benzoate. That's BAD!!
