FYI - For those with Amazon prime credit card, you may be able to get 6-7% cash back on this purchase. Which makes this a better deal than other retail stores.

I am currently using a 2022 macbook air with 8bg for mobile development. It has been an ok experience, but I wonder if I should get the newer model OR this other one from costco.

Just say no to 16GB of shared (non-upgradable) memory for the MacBook Air. Minimum should be 24GB.

16gb is fine today for apples current OS and typical laptop use cases. But it's my firm belief (and actually industry experience) that within 12-24 months MUCH more of the AI prompt, memory, caching and logic functions are going to run locally ON DEVICE. Not the LLM for sure but sub processes and personal local information storage and access. And THAT is going to be very much RAM hungry and dependent for rapid function. This isn't the same "future proof" ram for Os evolution but rather the near future is clear.

at the moment (Now not future) MacOS has an option to turn off its Ai functions and use the laptop normally without all the clutter.
I'm not saying that a new OS update won't disable that option. but for now its availabe to turn off and not waste ram/cpu usage.
I'm currently on my MB Air M3 with the Ai features turned off.
