Is there anything special I need to do to get a clear ice cube like the pictures?
I am guessing tap/filtered/distilled/spring makes a difference but is there anything else I should know?

Bad timing on this for me personally, LOL, or I'd probably be all over it. We had a hail storm the other day with ice balls nearly this big. Numerous cars were absolutely beat to hell and homes were damaged. If my mom's car weren't just totaled this would look pretty cool.

vacuum and boiled water remove gas from water. If you put cold (not freeze) water, in a vacuum chamber is the best way. Otherwise, you can use boiled water (cool to about 60C) before freezing. Distilled water work best, tap water bad and gases water are the worst.
Vacuum chamber is common in commercial kitchen, for packaging, Japanese stream egg and dessert making.
