Once again, if you need 11 internal powered channels and after Dirac, this unit is hard to beat imo.

I picked this up during the recent sale (similar to this one about three weeks ago). I was honestly a bit skeptical at first about the condition, but after receiving it, I was glad to see it was brand new and in perfect shape. I also paid extra for shipping/handling protection for peace of mind, and in my opinion, it was worth it.

I've set it up in a 3.1.2 configuration so far (all svs speakers), and even at this stage, the experience has been absolutely mind-blowing. I'm coming from a Sonos 5.1 system, and the difference is truly night and day.

Action scenes and even music tracks hit on a completely different level — I've been getting goosebumps frequently, something I honestly haven't experienced in years.

Looking forward to expanding the setup further, but even now, this has been one of the best upgrades I've made.

I just ordered it. Today I boxed up and sent in my Denon AVR-X6700H for repair. There is no telling how long the repair process will take, so I went ahead and got this one. With the Denon (plus a 2-channel external amp and 2 subwoofer y-adpaters), I've been running a 9.4.4 channel system. With the Onkyo, I'll be losing the Wide speakers, but they get almost no use anyway except in multichannel stereo mode. The Klipsch towers I'm using as my Wides are just taking up space.

You might need to double check the implementation/configuration of the wides if you're getting nothing.
They are designed to widen your front soundstage, as name implies.
When set up correctly, it should be obvious ime.

Why the y-adapters, it has 2 independent subs out & RC support for them.
You will need to add DLBC to this for Dirac's subwoofer RC support.
You don't lose it with the 6700.

Did you ever look into or try A1EVO Express?
It's free and gives you comparable performance of both Dirac Live & DLBC for free.

You also lose the capability of 3 pairs of object based positions(only two on this).
With object based soundtracks, you're better using 3 pairs(ie 5.2.6 offer,7.2.6) ime.

Like you, I'm accustomed to a different calibration system. I've been using Audyssey A1 EVO for years. I don't know anything about Dirac except that I will need to pay $300 extra for Direct Live Bass Control because I run multiple subs.

Tough call especially if not an upgrade one from the other.

My take from personal experience & generally speaking.

Brand preference rules especially if you know how to manually calibrate a system.

Priority in features is next, room correction is a big one.

As far as build quality, Yamaha has been known for good build but this is built pretty good also.

Yes Dirac's algorithms is a premium room correction system.
One significant benefit often overlooked is the versatility of manual adjustments.
Especially on the most important part of a setup(imo), bass integration especially low bass.

I don't believe the A8A has hit this price so it will cost you more.
If you're a Yamaha fan, I would assume the extra $300 would be well worth it.

Here is a feature comparison.

In my opinion I think you will be impressed
I have personally owned the Onkyo RZ70 sister units, the Pioneer LX805 and Integra 8.4

The Onkyo will feel very heavy to you compared to what you had...there is a reason , the amp/power supply perform like nothing even close to its price point

Even running basic Dirac ( non DLBC) against Audyssey XT32, I noticed a substantial sound difference in my own application many years ago when I first made the switch
The steering and clarity, of the smallest details, is much better with Dirac to my ears

I suggest you look over the owner's forum on AVS..People have owned this unit for a few years and have a lot of tips and trips specific to it
https://www.avsforum.com/threads/...s.3280951/

You also might look at the Audioholics review where Gene DellaSala, a well respected published AV professional says its the best AVR under $3500..he also goes into just how good the SINAD performance is as well

You might take a look at this review from a well known published AV professional

If you already own the A8A..I would say it depends on your mix of music to HT

I personally dont like listening to 2 channel music using room correction or matrixed into multi channel audio
. I also havent owned a Yamaha AVR in many years so I dont know if YPAO is the same as it was years ago in my own home

But people seem to say that yamaha AVR's are musical

if you are majority HT, I am thinking you will prefer Dirac

"When set up correctly, it should be obvious ime."

Everything is set up correctly. When watching movies encoded with Atmos sound for example, the Wides light up in the display but almost always remain silent. They are also barely noticeable when extending 5.1 sources to 9.4 using Dolby Surround. When using multi-channel stereo mode, they come to life. I mainly use my home theater for watching movies, so having two big Klipsch towers as Wides seems like a waste.

"Why the y-adapters, it has 2 independent subs out & RC support for them."

I have four identical 12" subwoofers. Both the Denon AVR-X6700H and the Onkyo TX-Z70 only have two subwoofer outputs. The newer model Denon X6800H has four subwoofer outputs, but it's a lot more expensive. Hence, I will need to use the y-adpaters or get rid of two of my subwoofers. Serko (OCA) used to post on AVS before a few trolls ran him off, and he gave me some advice for how to set up my subs and measure them. Obviously it isn't a perfect solution.

"Did you ever look into or try A1EVO Express?"
I currently use A1 EVO Express. I've been following Serko for years. I have not made the leap to Accoustica. I was very pleased with the sound of Express. The reasons for updating my receiver are because my Denon had to be sent in for repair, and this Onkyo is on sale.

"With object based soundtracks, you're better using 3 pairs(ie 5.2.6 offer,7.2.6) ime."

I don't have ceiling speakers. I only have front heights and rear heights. I don't see myself ever installing ceiling speakers in my 18.5' vaulted ceilings because it would be a lot more work than I'm prepared to do.
