I heard it's usually recommended to get enclosed ones. Is this safe to use indoors? Or is this more for garages or small shops?

I posted on this model once before. The safety isn't because of fumes per say. I suppose that depends on what the laser is hitting but rather the reflections and protective filtering. There isn't much here and even at 2.5w that's enough to blind you. Some materials will not absorb the light but instead reflect it. You shouldn't try to engrave those materials with this diode based engraver. But sometimes mistakes are made which is why I always recommend that while a laser is in use it is either enclosed, the room is blocked off and the the driver is wearing protective eyewear. And we're not talking about the front lense-based eyewear but rather something that completely encompasses the eyes - including periphial protection. Finally I implore you to do your own research here. In my personal opinion 2.5 Watts for a diode base laser will barely do anything. So I find very little value in this set. It will on the other hand be good for training. Without air assist and more power I wouldn't personally invest in this.

Dang Rosewill is still around? I used to have a bunch of budget pc peripherals and parts from them in the 2000s and 2010s from newegg

Thank you for the feedback. Can you recommend a decent model for someone new to engraving? I would be a beginner with laser engraving but pretty advanced with 3d printing and designing. Thank you!

I just bought "Falcon 5W CR-Laser Engraver and Cutter" $85 (after coupons WELCOME5 + CFNY10)
https://slickdeals.net/f/19444695
Per google overview:
"The primary difference between these two machines is their scale and power. The Falcon 5W CR-Laser is a desktop-class engraver for larger projects (working area 400 x 415 mm), while the Rosewill Ray6 2.5W is an ultra-portable, compact unit for small items (working area 130 x 140 mm)"
Can't say if it's a good choice - this would be my first engraver. I've had a Creality 3D printer though, and I'm hoping for a similar or better experience with their engraver

These put off a lot of smoke because they are burning what you put under it. Also, if it isn't well vented, the smoke can block the lens of the laser.
