Mostly to lower chair costs, but probably also to avoid lawsuits. I bought a set of these roller wheels for my office chair and they're great, just they are also soooo easy to roll. For the first year, I couldn't push back without the chair trying to roll across the room. Years later, they still roll like butter.

If these shipped on new chairs, clumsy people would hurt themselves fast and and frequently, then file frivolous lawsuits.

I bought a similar set about 6 years ago to replace failing wheels on a 20+ year old high quality office chair. Chair has finally worn out and I pulled the wheels off to use on my new chair since they are still in perfect like new condition after 6 years of M-F use. What amazes me is how crappy the caster wheels are on one of the most expensive office chairs that staples sells. I just love the smooth feel of the soft urethane vs hard plastic casters. Reminds me of when I replaced the steel rollers with urethane ones on my garage door, life changing- what good is a quiet belt drive door opener if your ancient steel rollers are loud as hell. The price of a decent chair mat also blows my mind. If it weren't for staples rewards I couldn't drop the better part of $100 on a chair mat just on principle LOL.

There are plenty of those posts on the site but I'm guessing you've never used these types of wheel on an office or gaming chair. I got some 4-5 years ago for my gaming chair and it is a world of difference. That chair is now very worn down and needs to be replaced, so I'm looking at a new set. May also grab for my kids. This price isn't a crazy deal or anything but wheels like these for office/gaming chairs is well worth it.

I owned a set and they're great for rolling around the office like a skateboard. However, given most people don't do extensive rolling on office chairs, a problem you might find is that it won't sit still and you'll be constantly shifting your body to keep it from moving around. The reason traditional casters work is that they roll when needed, but remain still while you're working. I returned mine.
