I got one of these, same brand I think, couple of years ago for about $10. Maybe there's a better deal?

Pity it isn't butane. Would have been a steal.

Why is butane any better in this size of a stove?

This stove looks a lot like a catering burner, and those usually run on butane. The canisters are smaller, lighter, and cheaper. In some parts of the world, especially tropical countries where cold weather performance is immaterial, butane is ubiquitous and it's difficult to find propane.

On the other hand, it can be difficult to find butane in many rural parts of the US, where propane is ubiquitous. And propane has much better cold weather performance, which presumably matters to some people looking to buy a stove like this.

(Note that when I say "butane" I mean the catering canisters, not the backpacking canisters, which are actually 20% propane to make up for butane's abysmal cold weather performance. Those are excellent for backpacking—they balance weight, bulk, and performance, and they're more durable than catering canisters—but they're much less ubiquitous and much more expensive and generally would not make sense to use outside of backpacking. They certainly wouldn't be a good choice to run a full-size burner like this.)

Best I can tell the canisters are about the same price per volume of fuel compared to propane, if you buy them in bulk for either option. This is for the US anyway.

This stove is not that small, it's size is really only useful to me if you want an add on burner to your normal coleman/eureka camp stoves, but those have a wind screen built in so you lose that. If I was using this in on the back of my car or something while car camping or on a road trip, I'd just buy the bottletop type or similar.
