Put this in our kitchen last year to replace a tiny little fan that was in the middle of the room (we don't have the largest kitchen) and it's worked really well. Would recommend to anyone that needs a small fan to move a bit of air and a pretty bright and adjustable light.

Is this better than the $30 ones on Amazon?

I find that the outer black frame restricts illumination in the room. I wish I had installed this one in my daughter's room instead but it's not on sale:

They won't get these for us... we would use the fan blades for shanking.

I had this and suppose for the price it may be worth it, but I personally didn't like it and ended up returning it for the Edwin model, which I like much better. I needed to light a smaller bedroom that I use as an office, but the design of the Austin doesn't cast much light around the room due to its design. It leaves the areas near the walls pretty dim. The Edwin is much better in this regard and I would recommend getting it when it's on sale. There is now an even larger model that is similar to the Edwin that I would probably recommend the most, but I haven't personally owned it.
It is worth mentioning, however, that the Austin model does have a light color/temperature feature that the Edwin doesn't have, which is nice. But that feature was less important to me than having a more thoroughly lit room.

10 years later, we are going to look back at this style and go "what the heck were we thinking?"

It's coming from Costco, so extremely likely based on that fact alone. Amazon's wholly worthless as a company for real world consumers anymore.
