Wouldn't the screw need to be at least partially unscrewed for this to work?

Thanks for the link to the pliers. I recently tried to use 2 different sets of "Screw extractors" (Not the set posted here) on SS screws that were recessed in a sprinkler valve cover with horrible results. Had to eventually use an angle grinder to cut through a section of the valve top and release the damaged screws. Pliers would not have helped in my case (recessed screws) but they would be good to have around in the toolbox.

I bought this to extract a damaged regular philips head screw and ended up damaging the extractor.

I literally bought this exact item a few days ago. The bit broke and the screw is still stuck.
