Look for countertop miss-cuts in the back of Lowe's or Menards or Home Depot. You don't need to match the 16 inch width, your wood can overhang forward beyond the end

132 lbs max weight so it's not heavy duty. Might be good for kid's work station.

It does not come with the wooden shelf itself. Does anyone have a link for the proper wood to use with this?

And wood will work. I've used with pine, melamine, oak and even plywood. (Not this exact brand but similar shelves) I use the heavy duty ones but just depends on what you are trying to achieve.

Can't find any with 16" dimension in Homedepot website. 12" boards are available though.

I can't speak to this particular company, but these things are great. I used a piece of ikea wood countertop and created a pretty big folding desk. Sturdy.

I'm looking to get my microwave off the counter. Would these be acceptable for a shelf to hold it?

Need it to hold more weight? Add more in. I'm considering these for a foldout countertop for my cargo trailer camper conversion. There's also the spring ones. I also bought some hinges like they put on coffee tables so I can have the countertop come up and have storage underneath.
