There's a reason this old model remains pricey. This and the 3200 are the best drip machines under $100.

Very true. They make good coffee and don't break. I've used this machine for over 10 years.

Is it that much better than the one at Costco that is $49?

Thank you for bringing this up. The Cuisinart Brew Central Plus 14-Cup is better priced as well... I was super curious and got AI to give some insight.
Short answer: For the absolute best cup when you're willing to tune grind, dose, and water, the 14‑Cup Brew Central Plus will deliver the deeper, more controllable extraction; for the most consistently good cup with minimal fiddling, the 12‑Cup DCC‑1200 is the safer, more forgiving choice.
Quick comparison (quality‑focused)

AttributeCuisinart 14‑Cup Brew Central Plus (CBC‑8500PC)Cuisinart 12‑Cup Brew Central (DCC‑1200) Extraction controlBrew Strength (Regular/Bold); tunable extraction.Single extraction profile; fewer tuning options. Costco CoffeeAtoZ Temperature performanceDesigned for hotter, more stable brewing; adjustable plate.Brews hot and holds well; many tests report consistent brew temps ~180–185°F. Costco CoffeeAtoZ Spray / water distributionModern showerhead; can produce uneven spots if not tuned.Classic showerhead and slower cycle; often yields very even, forgiving extraction. GearLab alpinemountaincoffee.com Sensitivity to grind/beansHigher — extracts more aggressively; needs fresh beans and correct grind.Lower — more forgiving; easier to get a good cup without precise tuning. GearLab alpinemountaincoffee.com Best forUsers who tune (grind, dose, water) and want stronger/iced options.Users who want a reliable, great cup with minimal adjustment. Costco alpinemountaincoffee.com
Evidence synthesis (what the tests and reviews say)

  • 14‑Cup strengths: Product specs and retailer listings show the CBC‑8500PC includes Brew Strength and Over‑Ice modes and explicit temperature controls — features that enable stronger, hotter, and more repeatable extraction when used correctly. Costco
  • 14‑Cup caveat: Independent lab testing (GearLab) found the 14‑cup model can produce light, astringent or bitter cups if the spray pattern or grind isn't tuned, indicating higher extraction potential but also higher sensitivity. GearLab
  • 12‑Cup strengths: Multiple reviews and tests report the DCC‑1200 brews consistently hot and yields a balanced, predictable cup that many users call "the best" because it's hard to spoil; long user‑review history reinforces this perception. CoffeeAtoZ alpinemountaincoffee.com
Practical, quality‑first recommendations

  1. If you want the best possible cup and will tune: buy the 14‑Cup. Use slightly finer grind, 1:15–1:16 coffee:water by weight, and use Bold mode; test 2–3 brews to dial in. Costco GearLab
  2. If you want reliably great coffee with no tuning: buy the 12‑Cup DCC‑1200; use medium grind, standard 1:16 ratio, and replace charcoal filter regularly. CoffeeAtoZ alpinemountaincoffee.com
Risks, trade‑offs, and final note

  • Risk with 14‑Cup: more variables → higher upside but also higher chance of a poor cup if grind/beans/water are off. GearLab
  • Risk with 12‑Cup: less flexible; you can't push extraction strength as far. CoffeeAtoZ
