I have had major issues with the gears and we were lucky our first kitchen-aid mixer had a metal gear box. Eventually the planetary fell out and needed replacement so we simply upgraded to the new DC model. It was the affordable option at the time. The lower noise makes it a joy to use. We will see how well it lasts. Family found the old model one day and decided to repair it.
