⚠️ Why you should avoid refurbished Ninja Creamis
I highly recommend passing on these refurbished units. I bought one that quickly broke, and after diving into how these machines actually work, it makes total sense why so many of them are returned damaged.
The Mechanical Flaw:
The Creami operates basically like a drill press, and the blade is held onto the end of the shaft by a magnet. When people freeze their bases, the ice crystals expand and naturally form a hard mound in the center of the pint. The instructions explicitly tell you to make sure the frozen contents are perfectly flat before running it, but most people ignore this.
The Damage:
When the "drill press" comes down and the blade hits that frozen mound unevenly, it starts to violently wobble. This causes severe friction and heat, which permanently demagnetizes the magnet on the tip of the shaft. Worse, it can bend the main shaft or strip the threads where it attaches to the blade, which leaves metal shavings in your ice cream and stops the blade from spinning entirely.
The "Refurbished" Trap:
People return these machines after completely ruining them through user error. They get boxed right back up and sold as "refurbished," but they already have permanently dead magnets, bent shafts, and stripped threads.

If you already bought one:
Use some hand sanitizer to remove the sharpie marks on the serial number and QR code on the sticker on the back because Ninja customer support will have you take a picture of that sticker in a video call before they will send you a new replacement base.

I had an issue with a refurbished model and they sent me a brand spanking new one. Ymmv, but I'd jump on this...

Can anyone speak to how this compares to the kitchenaid bowl attachment for churning ice cream? I'd imagine it's the same principle. Just seems like kitchenaid are much better built, even after the last changes they've made
I can't give you a 1:1 comparison since I have the Swirl, not the Creami, but I do have the KitchenAid ice cream attachment. It really just depends how often you'll use it.If you only make ice cream once or twice a month, I'd stick with the Kitchenaid since it basically works the same. The Creami is better for convenience and smaller batches. If you like making different flavors or using it often, it's 100% worth it. I've been using my Swirl on the reg since I bought it on sale. Just don't buy it refurbished.

I own one. I don't like how the ice cream hardens into a block in the freezer once it is made.

Note, the way around this is to freeze your base for the few hours without the lid on it, then put the lid on. For most (including myself), that gets rid of the hump in the center of the pint.

My kids were screaming for one for a while so I bought one. They lost interest after 2 or 3 batches. Now it sits in my office closet on a shelf.

The Creami works on a very different principle: it's a reverse-engineered Pacojet, a high-end culinary tool for restaurants. While the KitchenAid bowl churns sugar and fat to emulsify ice cream the traditional way, a Pacojet/Creami simply pulverizes any frozen base: you could make "ice cream" out of a frozen pint of spaghetti and meatballs if you wanted to.

The upside of this for many people is that the Creami makes it easy to make ice cream out of low-sugar/low-fat alternatives, like protein powder. I had a KitchenAid bowl for many years, and while it made wonderful ice cream, the Creami lets me and my kids experiment with a much wider variety of frozen treats.

Bought a creami refurb from woot back in 23. Kinda scratched up, but worked flawless. A few months later the deluxe refurb came up on woot. Gave my parents the original creami and both have worked with no problems for 3 years.

They don't just get boxed back up, they're actually refurbished and as long as you're not a moron and follow directions there's no issues.

Folks sometimes (often) make a brick of ice they want the Creami to turn into ice cream. It's kind of an ice shaver, but not really. See the site https://scoop-science.com to build a base that's appropriate for the Creami to magic into ice cream.
