I bought the Greenworks push mower on exactly the same advise a few years ago, replacing a gas self-propel, and this was a stupid move. Still looking for decently priced self-propel 80V which this one definitely isn't.
There were 2-batteries Greenworks slef-propelled deals for under $300 in the past, but for now this is an OK deal.

Kobalt's 80V self propelled mower is being treated as a strong cordless option for yards that need more than a basic push mower, with clean cuts, good power, and noticeably quieter operation than gas. The shared 5Ah battery system is a plus for owners who already use Kobalt 80V tools, and the mower is described as easy to use once the rear wheel drive behavior is understood. Battery life is the main watchout, especially in thick grass, hot weather, or larger yards, where extra batteries may help. The deal also drew price adjustment and rebate chatter that could bring the cost down further.
Common Questions (6)
For a tiny, perfectly flat lawn, the self-propel feature may be unnecessary because the mower is light enough to push. On hills or even small inclines, self-propelled assistance is useful and a push-only mower can become tiring.
A price adjustment has been credited after buying the mower at a higher price, including a $409 purchase that was adjusted to the lower sale price. One adjustment was done through online chat for $30 back, while another attempt was reportedly denied, so results can depend on the channel and agent.
The batteries are warrantied for 3 years, and real-world life is often around 3-5 years depending on use and climate. Thick or tall grass drains them faster, and keeping blades sharp, the deck clean, and mowing more often helps extend runtime.
The self-propelled version is useful on hills and in hot weather, and the mower can deliver clean cuts with enough battery life for a typical yard. In soggy spring conditions or very tall grass, electric mowers can stall more easily and battery life drops faster.
Yes, the 80V 5Ah battery can be shared with other Kobalt 80V tools such as a string trimmer. That makes the mower more useful if you already own or plan to buy other Kobalt 80V equipment.
Yes, it is much quieter than gas mowers and can still be quieter even when running alongside one. That makes it a better fit for noise-sensitive neighborhoods.

All my equipment is gasoline now. Anybody know about how long the batteries last before going bad? I live in a hot climate that tends to eat batteries for lunch. Even car batteries don't last more than about 3 years here.
I'm in the Ego battery ecosystem, and have one 7.5Ah unit that went bad after about 2 years (it's not dead, but its overheat/overload protection activates somewhat randomly, and it won't always recharge correctly.) Customer service walked me through a quick troubleshooting procedure to confirm it was faulty, then shipped me a replacement.
All my others are still near original capacity after 3–5 Texas summers.

There is always the need for assistance for a TON of people.
My yard is 100% hill. A push mower is terrible.
