Rowing is a great full-body workout, it works about 85% of the muscles in the body.
Losing weight, however, is a simple math problem of calories in vs calories out. If you row enough to be in a calorie deficit, you'll lose weight. If you don't change your activity level at all but eat enough less food to put yourself in a calorie deficit, you'll lose weight. That said, increasing activity gradually and revising your diet to be overall healthier (less sweet/oily foods, more whole foods and proteins) and putting yourself into ~300 calorie deficit is kind of the sweet spot for increasing overall health and losing weight.
The real key is finding an activity that you don't hate doing and can stick to consistently.
