This 16 inch IdeaPad Pro 5 stands out as a thin and light OLED laptop with a strong low end RTX 5050, a great screen, and solid performance for basic gaming and everyday use. The $750 price is repeatedly framed as strong versus typical pricing around $880 to $1000, especially for the display and GPU. Battery life can be excellent in Power Saver mode, but it can also fall to around three hours when the 5050 stays active. Soldered memory, no MUX switch, and finicky HDMI G SYNC support are the main tradeoffs, making it a capable but imperfect budget performance pick.

This looks solid. Thoughts? Haven't been keeping up with the laptop deals.

I just bought, having been looking for the past few months, this seems good as any. Tried ordering the
ASUS ExpertBook P5 Copilot+ PC AI Laptop, Intel® Core™ Ultra 5 Processor 226V, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, WiFi 6E, Windows 11 Home, Misty Grey, P5405CSA-DH54 @ $389 that popped up briefly at end of March - that deal went thru but they refunded after shipping, fingers crossed here.

Soldered RAM dampens the deal but it's still great for $750.

Bought this on eBay recently. He's my experience. It's a very impressive laptop with two issues that drive me crazy:
  • There is no MUX switch, which means a couple of things...
    • You can't connect the screen directly to the 5050. it always goes through the iGPU, so you're not getting the full power of the 5050. I don't consider this a huge deal, but it's a little disappointing. You do get VRR, but Freesync Premium, no G-SYNC obviously.
    • Because it has no MUX switch, you can't turn off the dGPU from software. So the battery life is crap. Three hours and that's with every power-saving feature enabled and screen brightness at 30%. Not kidding. Go to the Nvidia control panel and tell it to prefer iGPU, no help. No chance at more battery life. The only way to get better battery life is to turn off the dGPU IN THE BIOS (are you kidding me?!?!) which also disables the HDMI port. Then you will get pretty good battery life at around seven hours. That drives me crazy.
  • External monitor is fussy.
    • If you want to connect an external monitor, it's REALLY finicky with the HDMI port and G-SYNC. The HDMI port goes directly to the 5050, so that's good. But I tried it with four different monitors and on only one did G-SYNC work (an Alienware AW2724DM). It has to be connecting to an HDMI 2.1 port with a high-speed HDMI 2.1 cable and even then it's iffy. Another monitor I have with an HDMI 2.1 port wouldn't work (AOC 2724ZD) and I tried it with a Gigabyte M34WQ and that didn't work with G-SYNC. Those monitors work fine with any other Nvidia based laptop, old and new.
    • The two USB4 ports connected directly to the iGPU. So if you're using a USB to DisplayPort cable, you should be fine. But again, you're not getting access to the 5050 directly.
The screen is fantastic. It's the highlight of the device. The soldered memory is a disappointment, but this isn't a gaming laptop, so I'm not obsessed over that. It has a small SSD, but you can swap that out. It's also light at 4lbs. That's not bad for a 16" laptop. It's also not loud even when going maxed out for gaming.
The graphics issues is annoying to me because I like the 5050 for basic gaming (which it does really well) and then if I want to do something more intensive, I can use GeForce Now so I get the best of both worlds. For that I want to connect to the dGPU so I can get G-SYNC to smooth out the frame rates. But it's just so damn picky.
Personally, I think $750 for this laptop is a steal if you can deal with the issues I mentioned. Seriously, it's a really nice laptop. One thing to also keep in mind is that the power button is on the side. A lot of people don't like that because they accidentally turn it on. It's true. But I liked the idea because I figured I would have it docked in clamshell mode behind my monitor and turn it off and on when I need it without opening it, so that didn't bother me. But the battery life when using it as a laptop....argghhhh!

That model has no dedicated GPU. It's using integrated graphics. Not in the same league to a 5050.

I've been waiting for a 16" OLED laptop for the last few months. Pulled the trigger on this. This same model is on Amazon right now for $1000, with occasional price dips to $880. $750 is a good deal, although not the $800 discount Lenovo would like you to think.

Yes great observations. I picked this up on the last deal. Agree with all of the above. One thing you may help with your battery life is use battery saver mode on windows in the taskbar. It gets me 8+ hours of web browsing and movie watching.

If I use auto mode or battery profile from Lenovo advantage, I get the same results of 3 hours only and utter disappointment.

If you don't need it immediate ... I would try and wait for the best buy open box deals.

I got a yoga slim 7i (32GB ram, 1TB ssd and touch screen) for under 700.

What "battery saver mode on windows in the taskbar."? I only see "Power Saver" in the taskbar and when I turn it on, I get very little benefit. 2.5 hrs. at 83%. I'd love to know how you got this as it might allow me to keep this laptop. What am I missing?
EDIT: It looks like "battery saver" mode was removed in the 24H2 update and changed to "Power Saver" which doesn't seem to help me at all as I'm on 25H2. What version of Windows are you running?
