This 16 inch IdeaPad Pro 5 stands out as a thin and light OLED laptop with a strong low end RTX 5050, a great screen, and solid performance for basic gaming and everyday use. The $750 price is repeatedly framed as strong versus typical pricing around $880 to $1000, especially for the display and GPU. Battery life can be excellent in Power Saver mode, but it can also fall to around three hours when the 5050 stays active. Soldered memory, no MUX switch, and finicky HDMI G SYNC support are the main tradeoffs, making it a capable but imperfect budget performance pick.

  • The OLED display is described as the highlight of the laptop.

  • The laptop is reported to be light and not loud even during maxed gaming.

  • Battery life can reach about eight hours for web and movie use with Windows power saving settings.

  • The AI 340 platform is described as efficient, and careful background-process control can help battery longevity.

  • The lack of a MUX switch can force external display use through the iGPU, limiting full RTX 5050 performance.

  • Battery life can drop to around three hours when the dGPU runs, and improving it may require disabling the dGPU in BIOS.

  • External monitor support is reported as finicky, with G-SYNC over HDMI 2.1 working only with specific monitors and cables.

  • Windows battery saver behavior may differ by update, with some systems only showing Power Saver and seeing roughly 2.5 hours runtime.

How does this compare to this? https://www.costco.com/p/-/dell-1...4000372374
Lenovo is usually the better build. That said Dell does have more storage and ram but Lenovo has better screen and GPU. Which one to choose depends on how you will use it.

Bought this on eBay recently. He's my experience. It's a very impressive laptop with two issues that drive me crazy:
  • There is no MUX switch, which means a couple of things...
    • You can't connect the screen directly to the 5050. it always goes through the iGPU, so you're not getting the full power of the 5050. I don't consider this a huge deal, but it's a little disappointing. You do get VRR, but Freesync Premium, no G-SYNC obviously.
    • Because it has no MUX switch, you can't turn off the dGPU from software. So the battery life is crap. Three hours and that's with every power-saving feature enabled and screen brightness at 30%. Not kidding. Go to the Nvidia control panel and tell it to prefer iGPU, no help. No chance at more battery life. The only way to get better battery life is to turn off the dGPU IN THE BIOS (are you kidding me?!?!) which also disables the HDMI port. Then you will get pretty good battery life at around seven hours. That drives me crazy.
  • External monitor is fussy.
    • If you want to connect an external monitor, it's REALLY finicky with the HDMI port and G-SYNC. The HDMI port goes directly to the 5050, so that's good. But I tried it with four different monitors and on only one did G-SYNC work (an Alienware AW2724DM). It has to be connecting to an HDMI 2.1 port with a high-speed HDMI 2.1 cable and even then it's iffy. Another monitor I have with an HDMI 2.1 port wouldn't work (AOC 2724ZD) and I tried it with a Gigabyte M34WQ and that didn't work with G-SYNC. Those monitors work fine with any other Nvidia based laptop, old and new.
    • The two USB4 ports connected directly to the iGPU. So if you're using a USB to DisplayPort cable, you should be fine. But again, you're not getting access to the 5050 directly.
The screen is fantastic. It's the highlight of the device. The soldered memory is a disappointment, but this isn't a gaming laptop, so I'm not obsessed over that. It has a small SSD, but you can swap that out. It's also light at 4lbs. That's not bad for a 16" laptop. It's also not loud even when going maxed out for gaming.
The graphics issues is annoying to me because I like the 5050 for basic gaming (which it does really well) and then if I want to do something more intensive, I can use GeForce Now so I get the best of both worlds. For that I want to connect to the dGPU so I can get G-SYNC to smooth out the frame rates. But it's just so damn picky.
Personally, I think $750 for this laptop is a steal if you can deal with the issues I mentioned. Seriously, it's a really nice laptop. One thing to also keep in mind is that the power button is on the side. A lot of people don't like that because they accidentally turn it on. It's true. But I liked the idea because I figured I would have it docked in clamshell mode behind my monitor and turn it off and on when I need it without opening it, so that didn't bother me. But the battery life when using it as a laptop....argghhhh!

I stand corrected. It is power saver. I'm on the latest windows update as well. I did Lenovo vantage updates and now I don't let it startup with windows.

As a laptop you should be running a lean ship. Did you format the laptop and clean install windows? Also make sure you don't have any weird processes running in the background.

The ai 340 is an efficient processor. It should last you quite a while. Unless if the 5050 is running all the time.

These Ideapad Pro's have been Lenovo's sneaky secret for a few years now. They've fielded a decent low-end GPU (1650, 3050, 4050, now 5050), a good screen, and all in a thin-&-light 16" form factor. My buddy has used one for music mixing for a few years now. It's great if you want a large screen and fairly powerful internals on a budget. They typically allow a good amount of juice to the GPU, when other manufacturers choke the wattage. Keep an eye out for chassis flex, as the metal used is super-thin.

You don't let the vantage software startup with windows or you mean you disabled the GPU in bios?

I don't let vantage startup with windows. Only opening as needed. They are helpful shortcuts for power profile and refresh rate on the keyboard. I also turn off all the features that recognize if you look away from the screen as I feel a constantly checking camera can't be good for battery life. I think it's called smart assist.
