ASUS ExpertBook P5 Copilot+ PC AI Laptop, Intel® Core™ Ultra 5 Processor 226V, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, WiFi 6E, Windows 11 Home, Misty Grey, P5405CSA-DH54 @ $389 that popped up briefly at end of March - that deal went thru but they refunded after shipping, fingers crossed here.
- There is no MUX switch, which means a couple of things...
- You can't connect the screen directly to the 5050. it always goes through the iGPU, so you're not getting the full power the 5050. I don't consider this a huge deal, but it's a little disappointing. You do get VRR, but Freesync Premium, no G-SYNC obviously.
- Because it has no MUX switch, you can't turn off the dGPU from software. So the battery life is crap. Three hours and that's with every power-saving feature enabled and screen brightness at 30%. Not kidding. Go to Nvidia control panel and tell it to prefer iGPU, no help. No chance at more battery life. The only way to get better battery life is to turn off the dGPU IN THE BIOS (are you kidding me?!?!) which also disables the HDMI port. Then you will get pretty good battery life at around seven hours. That drives me crazy.
- External monitor is fussy.
- If you want to connect an external monitor, it's REALLY finicky with the HDMI port and G-SYNC. The HDMI port goes directly to the 5050, so that's good. But I tried it with four different monitors and on only one did G-SYNC work (an Alienware AW2724DM). It has to be connecting to an HDMI 2.1 port with a high-speed HDMI 2.1 cable and even then it's iffy. Another monitor I have with an HDMI 2.1 port wouldn't work (AOC 2724ZD) and I tried it with a Gigabyte M34WQ and that didn't work with G-SYNC. Those monitors work fine with any other Nvidia based laptop, old and new.
- The two USB4 ports connected directly to the iGPU. So if you're using a USB to DisplayPort cable, you should be fine. But again, you're not getting access to the 5050 directly.
The screen is fantastic. It's the highlight of the device. The soldered memory is a disappointment, but this isn't a gaming laptop, so I'm not obsessed over that. It has a small SSD, but you can swap that out. It's also light at 4lbs. That's not bad for a 16" laptop. It's also not loud even when going maxed out for gaming. The graphics issues is annoying to me because I like the 5050 for basic gaming (which it does really well) and then if I want to do something more intensive, I can use GeForce Now so I get the best of both worlds. For that I want to connect to the dGPU so I can get G-SYNC to smooth out the frame rates. But it's just so damn picky.
Personally, I think $750 for this laptop is a steal if you can deal with the issues I mentioned. Seriously, it's a really nice laptop. One thing to also keep in mind is that the power button is on the side. A lot of people don't like that because they accidentally turn it on. It's true. But I liked the idea because I figured I would have it docked in clamshell mode behind my monitor and turn it off and on when I need it without opening it, so that didn't bother me. But the battery life when using it as a laptop....argghhhh!
