A few very slight negatives: these make my ears more sweaty than the XM4 did. Since these new headphones are more flexible, the headband can move around and get twisted and angled on top of the head making it look like you're wearing then wonky. I'm constantly having to check to make sure the headband is straight across. The other slight negative is the outside ear cups show oily marks super easily which is a bit unpleasant to see but not a super big deal.
Overall I love these headphones and am glad I upgraded.

The Sony WH-1000XM6 attempts to address the XM5's fragility by using a new threaded metal mechanism in the hinge. However, some early technical teardowns and user reports indicate that while the plastic is less likely to snap, the internal nut can become loose over time, leading to a "dangling" earcup. While this is often a mechanical loosening rather than a material fracture, it still requires repair.
The Sony WH-1000XM4 remains the gold standard for durability in this lineup. Its traditional folding mechanism uses shorter lever arms, which reduces the physical stress placed on the pivot points. Users who prioritize a "rugged" feel typically prefer the XM4 over the newer, sleeker designs. The Sony WH-1000XM5 is widely considered the most delicate of the three due to its thin, single-contact swivel points.
