In my experience with carpet shampoo, unless some spot is incredibly stained or soiled, just use hot water. Any residual soap residue will collect dust and dirt. If you do use shampoo, rinse the living hell out of it. Not just one or two rinses, I'm talking 5 to 10

Just use less in the machine and it should still work. Soap is soap and will clean your carpet well. Do a rinse mode after wash mode to suck up any leftover soap.

Foam can wreck your machine, not worth the risk for a few bucks in savings. I agree with rinsing, I usually will make 2 passes with plain water after using soap in my rug doctor.
