Duke's Real Mayonnaise is praised for its tangier Southern-style flavor, with a richer egg yolk and vinegar profile than Hellmann's or Best Foods. It also gets credit as a strong value here, especially against recent mayo price increases and the usual higher shelf price. The main caution is freshness, since multiple bottles arrived with close dates, smudged expiration labels, or fully separated contents that would not remix. A solid pick if the dates are clear and the bottles arrive intact.

Common Questions (5)

  • The steep discount and price history suggest the bottles may be close to expiration, and several buyers report receiving short-dated or unreadable-date stock from Amazon. Check the expiration date before using or stocking up.

  • Duke's is described as having more tang and a stronger vinegar/egg-yolk profile than Hellmann's/Best Foods, which uses more lemon and less yolk. It is also used differently than Kewpie or Blue Plate for some shoppers.

  • Yes. Some bottles have arrived fully separated, with the oil and white base unable to be re-mixed, and one order had smudged-off expiration dates on all three bottles. In those cases, customers reported either a credit or no satisfactory resolution.

  • Yes. The 18-ounce bottles have been around $5.79 each at Kroger and the 3-pack has often sold for about $18, so $6.88 for the pack is a very low price by comparison.

  • Yes, other Duke's sizes and quantities are available at the same price per ounce, so you can choose a different pack size without changing the unit cost.

2 years ago the 6 pack of Dukes Mayo arrived with the oil separated from the white gunk, and would not mix. After sending photos to their customer service I got an auto reply "so sorry" but they never made it right.

Same, although I did get a full credit. Fully separated and no amount of shaking was going to get that back together again.

This seems like a excellent deal, mayo went up in price during the egg shortage and didn't seem to go back down (shocking)

Yes. Lessens the worthiness of being called a "slick deal".

Recently purchased and expiration dates on all three bottles were smudged off so you can't read them.
Won't be buying Dukes from Amazon anymore.

Just be aware like the comment above mine. I bought several bottles and they had close expiration dates. I feel pretty comfortable using some things past expiration dates because it doesnt mean it is bad, but that is just following certain guidelines. Im not giving advice to people to eat expired things, but the amount of people that freak out about it is pretty weird. For example I was told by someone they swore they ate expired yogurt and they felt like their were sick/getting sick. For anyone thats ever had bad yogurt... youll know that you would never eat it. First you would see mold or that it is very different looking. Second, you can smell it. Third, if you still took a bite, it would taste disgusting and you would spit it out immediately. If you still ate it after that, well id say you have more things to worry about than expired stuff.
I agree, people need to let the idea of "Best by x date" have more meaning than keep or throw out.

Emulsions can break, as anyone who has made mayo will attest to. You can use mixer but putting the "white gunk" in the bowl and slowly adding in the oil in a thin stream. A stick blender works even better. It's all about rebuilding the emulsion slowly, your own physics and chemistry demonstration from your kitchen.

Is it as good as Hellmann's?
Duke's has more egg yolk a vinegar accent, Hellman's/Best Foods mayo uses lemon and vinegar and less yolk. There isn't that much difference like there is between mayo and Miracle Whip, more in line with cafeteria style egg salad vs deviled eggs. Blue Plate, out of New Orleans, is yet another one that turns up the flavor but in a different way than dukes. I grew up on the HM/BF mayo and enjoy Duke's and Blue Plate, too. Variety is good! As long as it's not Miracle Whip lol

It's 5.79 per 18oz bottle at my local Kroger and this 3-pack has frequently sold for $18, so I think it's just down from the most recent price, but is overall a crazy cheap deal for Duke's (and likely near expiration).

Moved away from seed oil based mayo, mainly buy Primal now...its expensive, but you know, doesn't have any hexane in it.
That stuff is too expensive, man. Have you tried making your own? It's really easy and it's so much better tasting.

Surprisingly not yet, but i've gone through the work to replace other things I could make at home, primarily moving my pets away from dry kibble to home made foods with the proper amount of nutrients and REAL ingredients that don't get their vitamins baked out of them.

I have everything to make it though, definitely will consider doing this now because the good stuff is soooo expensive.
