...the bad, having owned it and the delay version etc, is that they go bad sitting on the shelf over time.

Given this information, a deal on one of the Behringer mini synths or a Korg Volca seems like the better choice. My Phara-O mini was $79 a month or so ago on the Behringer B Stock Reverb page. Basically a Volca Keys clone but can be powered by USB-C.

I got one of these... size is nice and it's a fun little toy but hits in a very strange price range... for twice the price you can get a unit that has 100x more features. Yer not really gonna be belting out much on this thing, but it is kinda good to run into a looper pedal. Built-in speaker throws off pretty good volume.... but ya would prolly be better off just snagging a used Pocket Operator for the same price... tho both the PO and the little Korg will chew through the AAA battery when not in use.

I just opened mine and started tinkering with it. I love it! I have a couple of pocket operators and never learned how to really use them as I haven't taken the time to learn them. This thing you just pick up and play which I love. Silly fun. Thanks again, OP!

I'm glad you like it! I'm getting this for my niece because she likes playing with some of my synth stuff when she came over. I figure it's small enough and has the speaker built in so it's a perfect toy/instrument to tinker with and shouldn't take up so much space or get so loud it drivers the rest of the house crazy.

I was better at buying synthesizers than playing them haha. But I'd have them check out Behringer synths. Maybe let the kiddo look at videos and see what excites them. If you are wanting to blind buy something for them, the Korg Minilogue XD is a very popular first synth. I think the Deep Mind 12 from Behringer is a great option for people with piano skills. It's more geared for performing, the minilogue is geared for sound designing. The Behringer JN80 might be another one to recommend.

But there's a zillion right answers. Whatever tickles their fancy is a good choice.

Volca or a one of the cheaper behringer synth. there are many to choose from at different price points and have the ability to do things like midi where you can plug a full size keyboard in.

If you have a MIDI capable electric piano I'll second the Volca and cheap Behringer mini line. I'll also throw in the Yamaha Seqtrak that's dropped to $250 now. It runs the same AWM sound engine that the Yamaha P-45 digital piano uses but includes far more voice options, including synths. It also has a DX synth engine and can do drums. Most of the synth control is best through an app (desktop or mobile/tablet). With the latest update you can also make all 7 drum parts a different AWM voice that uses a different MIDI channel.

Theres that Donner B1 only a little more for pretty good bass synth an yeah the Volcas, but this is fun too. For something a little more useful I've heard Microbrute is cool for like $200

The B1 is also center positive 9v 500mA for power. A guitar pedal power source with a polarity inversion attachment can run it.
