My assumption is that the hip belt on the back pack doesn't interfere and it's ultralight so grams become important to these long distance back packers. They cut the handles off of their toothbrushes even.

Agreed, but the mountain hardwear stuff that I own has been some of the best. I don't ever pay full price though, it's too much.

I thought the same at first but it's listed at 8.9 ounces (usually measure on size medium). That's not that light. There are plenty of full zip rain jackets that are lighter. I have one- marmot bio light rain jacket.
