Monoprice. A 3 foot patch cable would be 2.89. That is where I get all my patch cables from. The only place IMO it's economical to make your own cables is when doing runs in a house. Just my personal opinion.
i've borrowed soldering irons, LED worklights, cable crimpers and garden tools from mine.

Then sure if you have such a niche requirement then go ahead and buy these. A 3 in patch cable would be like 1 inch of cable and two connectors. Would be essentially useless. 1 foot is the smallest anyone really needs to go.
I'd say pros don't use pass throughs but unfortunately I see far too many amateurs masquerading as pros. I don't use 'em and won't let my techs use them. Just another point of failure, especially with PoE equipment.
