These items are designed for people who frequently engage with the environment in a given year. Such as everyone working with snow sports and mountain patrols. It will keep you protected from the environment such as keeping us dry, or reducing effects of strong wind on your body.
The durability is another strong quality of these. I start my 1st year snowboard with a cheap $70 spyder pant, it works well for the 1st year, but water starts to soak through on my 2nd year. Upgrade to a my current burton goretex 2L, and it has kept me dry for 4 years now. I had quite a few nasty fall on it, sliding down the icy slope with my bottoms many time, and the fabric still remains intact and keeping me perfectly dry. So these items do offer a real purpose.
Again, while I agree that these jackets are very expensive. I am not defending these companies, but it is ultimately all about business and money in the end. These companies serve a very small and niche population that demands high performance gears, so the margin of profit has so justify the risk of producing these. I just throws a number out there, but my guess is the material for these only cost around $50, then they try to sell for $700. The initial profit is large, but you have to include cost of distribution, designing, advertising, processing returns, replacing these jackets for life-time warranty claims, etc. The profit does shrink quite a bit when factoring in all those aspect, while you only have a small pool of population to work with.
If someone overall justification is staying dry while jogging around town, they are clearly looking at the wrong items. There are plenty of $50 rain coat and wind breaker for that.
I wouldn't buy to pay this price.
