This Schlage Camelot keypad lock is praised for its solid feel, long service life, and easy keyed-alike setup across matching door hardware. The product page rating is 4.6 stars from over 6,000 reviews, and long-term use runs from battery changes every few years to a unit still working after 14 years. The main concerns are durability and security, with reports of internal plastic or spring failures and a video showing the lock defeated with a 3 volt battery. It reads as a sturdy everyday lock, but not the most reassuring choice for higher security needs.

Common Questions (3)

  • It can last many years with only battery replacements; one unit has been used since 2016 with no issues beyond battery changes, and another still works like day one after 14 years. A reported caveat is that some units eventually develop internal failures, including a plastic part breaking or the knob spinning, so keeping the key handy is prudent.

  • The product page shows a 4.6/5 rating from over 6,000 reviews. That lines up with the strong durability reports, but there are also reports of internal failures and peeling buttons over time.

  • The Camelot lock has been shown to be defeatable with a 3V battery and wire ends placed between the numbers, so it is not ideal if maximum security is the goal. A more secure replacement mentioned is an ANSI Grade 1 Schlage model.

I just think that Schlage is higher quality. The 1 time I installed one of the Kwikset Smartkey locks it failed in less than 1 year.

When I changed the door hardware in my house I bought all of the keyed handles and dead bolts from Ferguson Home and they keyed them all alike.
Kwikset has been disappointing for me as well. I have gone through two warranty claims for defective products, battery drain issues (well known do a Reddit search). Left stranded many times.

What lock are you replacing it with?

Just going to leave this here. Lock picking lawyer defeats the Camelot lock with a 3v battery with wire ends stuck between the numbers.

I have this lock now and replacing it after seeding this video and would suggest anyone who cares about security to work on finding a ANSI 1 certified lock.

Still a Schlage but it's ANSI 1 certified.
