Single zone means there is one outlet, so one "circuit" that this valve controls. There are ones with 2 or more outlets which allow you to have different settings for different zones (circuits). Some plants need watering different frequencies, durations, etc, or you may have a need to split the watering between zones because of flow limitations if you have a lot of length or emitters. Think of a sprinkler system which has different areas that water one after the other. This is because of flow limitations inherent in the pipe due to friction.

Would these be safe to use while you are of town? The water technically has to be on all the time, correct? I get it the water is stopped up until the timer allows it to flow....at least I think that is how it works.

I don't think I would go out of town with these on, personally. Yes, you have to leave the spigot open and this opens/closes the valve at the bottom.

These are great. I have a garden. So I set mine to water around 6am and again at 6pm. So you can set to water a few times a day. As another post stated you can go out of town while using. But I would never do that. I still monitor it every so often.

I have used these for quite a few years for our garden and never had a problem being out of town. You could put a cheap camera on the water spigot And maybe set up a motion alert.

I've had one for a few years. I actually only use it while we're out of town. We have an automatic sprinkler system but there are a few planters it doesn't cover that I normally water by hand. When out of town I run a drip hose through the planters and connect to this timer.
It has always been perfectly reliable. If the hose bib that you're connecting it to is slightly out of round, you may need to wrap it with Teflon tape before installing the timer to eliminate any drips.

These type of devices have an internal electronically operated valve which opens and closes. I always check the batteries before travel.

Flood protection against plumbing failures is generally best handled at the main incoming line. There are many which monitors the water flow and have set points to reduce or cut off the water flow.
Even better is picking one which is wireless enabled for remote monitoring.
I have a ZigBee based network of water leak detectors for the toilets and sinks connected to Home Assistant.
I wish I had wireless outdoor valve controllers, but I can manually sink up my watering times with the main line valve.
This improves reliability of commanding the water off.

To add to this, it seems like the ring gaskets on many bins and hoses suck. A set of quality ones (softer and more compliant) which will not break down are economical.

If it fails to shut off the water, you are in for a flooded yard and high water bill.
