Too large to carry on too small to justify as a checked bag

See, I agree with this in theory. I have a 24" and a 28". Whenever I have to travel with a checked bag I almost always bring the 24". It's easier to navigate, sure, but the reality is I find it almost impossible to fill the 28" bag and stay under the 50 lbs limit. With the 24" I can fill it fully and I'm just about at the right spot while being easier to navigate. I know I still could use the 28" and just not fill it as much but this keeps my cloths nicely packed and I don't have to stress about going over the weight limit. I'll probably get thumbed down but it's just always what I gravitate to.

This!

I came here to post exactly that. My last stupid discount flight with TAP Portugal, they charged me $119 there and $94 back for each check in! No way I'd pay to take a 24" with me.

Side note: be careful about these discount airlines' "deals". They'll charge you an insane amount for all the extras. Like Norse won't even give you water on the flight unless you buy it.

I always thought that, but I'm a bit torn. On the other hand, sometimes it's nice to have a mid-sized suitcase. I've dragged a large 28" one up stairs and tried to get it above me on a train, etc and that's not fun at times. Something 2/3rd the size and weight could be a lot more manageable on overseas trips.
