A lot of folks will say that all you really need is a line conditioner. Others will say you need surge protection at your house service line AND at each power tap throughout the house. Other folks have relatively clean power and just don't bother with them at all. There's a huge variety of opinions out there.

330v is the lowest UL allows to certify as fire safe. Typical surge protection devices (SPD) of this type are anywhere from 330v up 800v.
I ask which voltage to use because surely someone else has already looked up the failure voltages for various electronic devices and make a better recommendation then the most expensive and shortest lived version of an SPD.

Clamping voltage and let-through rating appear to be used interchangeably, and my understanding (not an expert) is that they are two different things. Tripp-Lite makes units with 150 clamping voltage and a let-through of 330 volts.

Clamping/Let through voltage is being used interchangeablly. This seems to be pretty standard on all conversations for SPDs. The Arstechnica article seems to define clamping voltage separately.
Per Arstechnica, the Tripplite is still a 330v device, not a 150v device labeled as a 330v device. They're defining clamping voltage as VAC peak of 170v minus the let through voltage. I.E the movs are nominally 320v.
This is still a 330v device. As long as it passes ULs testing it's fine.
But why spend that much money an 800 VPR device works too?
