I've been looking for a decent inexpensive one for a while and a few random cheaper brands had reviews stating some plastic parts start melting due to poor design, but most cheap models seem to work well enough compared to the "good" brands that cost 2x, 3x, or even 4x more. Having no experience with this particular brand but based on my findings so far, I'd say maybe 10%-20% of cheap brands have serious issues like melting or smoking so odds are that this will probably be fine, like 85% chance?

Does this model make that atrocious "chemical smell" that is commonplace with new air fryers nowadays?

I'd say, yes - from one of the reviews of the same unit on Amazon:

Beware- if you buy this you will truly be sorry. Not only does the sticker (that's adhered to the top) not peel off, forcing you to scrape it off, leaving scratch marks and sticky residue (as noted in another review), more importantly, this air fryer stinks. I mean this literally. The odor of plastic is So bad. I washed the basket thoroughly, ran it empty for 10 mins at 400 (as recommended) and it did not fix the problem. I left it to air out for several weeks, repeated the cleaning & running for 10 mins. It smelled so bad, stunk up the entire house, took 2 days for the odor to clear out. I Literally threw it in our dumpster. Bought a Ninja, no odor right out of the package.
