Has anyone that has bought this in the past deals tried it with rechargeable NimH, and if so, how well did it hold up over alkaline?

Yes, concerned about possible battery leakage over time in the heat of the glove compartment. FWIW, I've never had a rechargeable battery leak yet.

I'd be more worried about its accuracy after months/years in a really hot car.

I just get a new mechanical one from my local auto parts store every year or so.

Do you test your old one to see if it is still accurate before you replace it? I have one (stick type) that has been in multiple cars for about 20 years total and it is still accurate (+/- 1pound) compared to my Jaco dial type gauge and a couple of different inflators.
