The bambino and Bambino plus are also on sale without a built in grinder

I suggest getting the machine and grinder separately, gives you far more range and if one breaks you can keep using the other

One of those plus an Encore ESP is cheaper overall and you can use the extra to buy a tamping station and better tamp

All their machines are set to 93* C, which is a good mid point for dark and medium roast but if you are going to do light or light-med roasts you might want to play with that setting

A little factoid from Mr. Google: The Breville Barista Express (model BES870XL) has sold over 2 million units worldwide as of late 2022. It is frequently cited as a best-selling, top-rated entry-level espresso machine, having maintained high popularity in North America for roughly 10 years.
All true! I love mine.

Yeah, this is a nice machine but the built-in grinder never appealed to me. Besides, I already had a nice Baratza grinder, so I ended up buying a Bambino Plus.

does not make impressive coffee (at least with builtin grinder) and these are always $499 at stores like marshalls / homegoods

It's all a bit amazing -- this particular model was first introduced around 2009 and who knows how many thousands Breville has sold since then. Of course it's getting a bit long in the tooth with some of its features being a bit outdated (the heating element being the most notable) but it continues to sell well. I'm convinced the exterior design is a huge part of its appeal. I mean it just looks the part of a solid espresso machine (the pressure gauge in particular is perfectly placed on the front panel). Genius.
What is wrong with the heating element?

The newer machines have what they call the ThermoJet heating system. With that system you can turn on a machine like a Bambino Plus and be ready to go in three seconds. The older thermocoil system used on the Barista Express takes 30 to 40 seconds to heat up and a similar amount of time to switch back and forth between brewing and steaming modes.

It takes that much time to grind the coffee in the portafilter, level and tamp it anyway. Now if you use a different grinder, you either upgrade the espresso machine or turn it on when you start grinding the coffee so it can start brewing when the portafilter is ready.

All that to say is that it is not a dealbreaker. If, on the other hand, it would make the machine prone to some kind of malfunction, that would be different.

You fail to see the significant savings this machine offers. Making a latte with 2 shots using this Breville costs about 50 cents factoring in milk and beans. That same drink at Starbucks runs $5-6. My wife and I made 2-4 drinks per day for 8 years before it just gave out last month. We saved tens of thousands of dollars making lattes at home vs. going to a coffee shop. This machine is a tank
