If you use the 7/11 mobile app and fuel rewards, be warned that 7/11 may freeze your your bank account for up to triple the amount of your prepayment.

When you use the mobile app to pay, you must select a pre-pay amount ($10, $20, $30, $40, $50 or Full Tank $175). After tapping Apple Pay or similar, 7/11 will then charge you twice for the same amount 2x $40 charges if $40 is selected. Once the sale is complete, a third charge for the actual amount will show up.

These prepayment holds may take up to 7 business days to release. I am learning this the hard way, 7/11 has now frozen more than $200 on my checking account.

At 4:40 am On 4/29 I filled my pickup, I had $.60 in discounts, I selected a prepaid amount of $40, actual amount ended up being $34.25. On 4/30, I was looking at my bank account, I had 3 charges from 7/11, two for $40 and 1 for $34.25. On 5/1 the $34.25 cleared the bank, but the two holds are still there.

On 5/2 I used my second $.60 discount to fill my car, again I selected $40 prepaid, the total amount was $37.50. The afternoon of 5/2 I had 3 charges from 7/11, two for $40 and one for $37.50.

Later in the day not thinking I stopped there to fill my gas can for my mower, selected $20, I now have 2 $20 holds and actual purchase of $16.50.

When I called 7/11 customer service via the app, I talked to 2 different people who spoke marginal English, but I was able to decipher this is normal. When I called my bank, the rep laughed and said they get this complaint about 7/11 mobile pay a lot, and sadly the hold appears to be 5 to 7 business, not 2 or 3 like most places.

Also, on the prepay is the option to "FULL TANK", if you click on that, it will tell you the maximum purchase amount is $175.00. Which means if you select it, they may freeze up to $350 in your account for 7 business days.

Will they not let you choose a credit card instead of your debit card to link to the app account?

I do not link any cards to them (I have the Speedway rewards app, which is the equivalent to 7-11 gas stations app, but I have not elected to use their app to pay.

If switching to a credit card is an option, do that immediately. Gas stations do this, but not as much in a multiple format like what you are reporting that this app does.

Most gas stations, when you pay with credit, put a certain hold amount, like $100 or whatever, on your credit card as pending like this.

If you do not use credit cards, or they don't allow them to be linked, STOP using the app to pay. Either pay in cash at the register or use debit or credit to pay at the pump, but you need to understand that there still will be an excess hold on your credit or bank funds if debit is used.

Thanks for the PSA.
