Micro 4/3 cameras were supposed to be a thing of the past, but they remain very good value.

I still love these cameras. I am in the Fuji system but shot so many good things with my micro 4/3.

Nestled between 1" sensor all-in-ones (like Sony RX10 IV) and APS-C sized sensor cameras, I like Micro 4/3 for a balance of sensor size vs a telephoto that I can handhold for a sustained period.

I'm about to jump on this... but the other camera I was considering (sometimes around this price) is the Canon R50... anyone with experience or knowledge can chime in?

I'm still grumpy they ditched the original 4/3rds system. I had two beautiful Leica lenses for my original LUMIX SLR.

they have a niche as a travel camera for outdoors. I like my g9, thinking about a g9ii or gh7 some day.

I'd like a good basic birding camera. How does this rate for that purpose?

The om-D om-1 is better. I bought mine for not much more than this refurbished from om system eBay. No lens on that though at this price. Generally speaking, Panasonic is better for video and om is better for birding. The main difference is phase detect autofocus on the om cameras, and AI bird detect on the om-1 specifically. It's just a night and day difference in performance for capturing birds in flight.

Edit: I paid 879 for the om-1, so it's definitely more speedy, and it's currently about a hundred more than that it you can look for sales or coupons.

With an adapter you can use it on modern m4/3 camera, although it would be best with a model that supports PDAF, for which this G97 is not.
