I'll continue to sing the praise of the Lowe's protection plan for this stuff. If you buy ANY of the Ego tools from Lowe's, buy the protection plan with it. One of the benefits is you get paid back 50% of the cost of any consumables used for that product, up to $100 per year, and batteries are covered by that plan. So each year of your 3 year plan (or whatever you go with) you can buy a $200 battery and get $100 back...or in this case, buy two of these $100 batteries and get $100 back. The carbon fiber shaft trimmer is currently on sale for $179, and a 3 year plan on that one is $34. Great way to save on batteries.

For an ego brand battery, this is a good deal, but you can get knock-offs now for even less than this sale. Are they as trustworthy as ego brand? I stick with ego, but that's what you need to weigh.

The problem with the third-party batteries is complete lack of any guarantees in performance or longevity outside the return window. The price difference is not significant enough over OEM to risk having a very heavy brick. I do wish EGO offered refurbished packs with refreshed cells to help the whole cycle be more eco friendly.

Last Spring, I was surprised by how expensive these still were, so I did the math on the cost of the packs vs industry-estimate BOM costs for bulk cells and there's not much room to give if they're buying decent quality cells. That means the 3rd-party packs can really only cut price by cutting corners! :-/

It's frustrating that battery improvements in terms of Ah per $ have slowed so badly. It used to be we'd get more for less over time. Seems like we've been stuck in limbo for 5 years now since COVID.
