Personal experience/opinion:
Only risk Excellent condition open-box items for shipping. If good or fair, do store pickup so you can have them show you it in store and verify the condition before they sell it to you, then you can just cancel the order if it's bad condition. I've had VERY mixed luck with BB open-box items but still generally go with them if it's an option as it's good money saved and still includes warranties (usually).

I believe they're supposed to include a full warranty from the time you purchase it, but sometimes the manufacturers will start the warranty when the device is set up the first time and if so, good luck. I have Total which includes up to 2 year geek squad so I just take it back to best buy when I have issues but ymmv.

I bought an open box "excellent" condition Moto Razr 2024+ on best buy back in Feb. Lasted exactly 66 days before the inner screen failed and I got that horrible black line at the crease. Neither Best Buy, or Motorola would take it back or exchange. Moto told me I was "8 days" past the phones manufactur warranty. Best Buy basically said SOL, you had 14 days to return. This has left a very very bad taste in my mouth. Especially since when I purchased what was described as a "new open box excellent condition" phone and thought it came with minimum 1yr warranty. Boy was I wrong.

That's the risk you take when you buy open-box and refurbished items. Even credit cards don't cover an extended warranty for anything that's not new.

How does this compare to a Steam Deck or ROG Ally for on-the-go/commute gaming?

My understanding is you'll need a portable power bank to keep the laptop going for a couple extra hours.

The Intel Ultra 7 256v in this laptop is VASTLY better than the steamdeck chip. 2X the single core and 2X the multi-core performance. iGPU is around 25% faster (but keep in mind old iGPU benchmarks are outdated, Intel's GPU drivers see more improvements overtime as they used to be less polished). Intel also fully supports their iGPUs with the latest upscaling and frame generation, while ALL AMD handhelds (Steam Deck, Ally, etc) are RDNA 2 and thus AMD wont give them FSR 4, so Intel wins there too.
This screen is also far more crisp with high resolution and high refresh rate. The Steam Deck OLED is a measly 800p and 90hz.
The only thing that isnt 'better' is the form factor. But you lose handheld gaming and get a small laptop that is better for productivity and daily use (nobody uses a steam deck to web browse and type)
For power consumption, the chip in this sips power, you wont need a power bank as it will outlast any 'reasonably long' gaming session on the go. However the main power drain is the screen. If you play outside in bright sunlight and crank the screen brightness to max, then yeah it wont last long but nothing will.

I had no intentions of getting another laptop, but this is a very good deal and its rare to find Lunar Lake (this chip) with a nice OLED screen at this price point, usually its only the bad ARM based laptops.

Not necessarily. All the Lenovos I've bought, they reset warranty to in-store purchase date.

Be very careful with Galaxy Book laptops. Apparently, the screen is very fragile and there have been quite a few reports from owners starting that their screen has spontaneously cracked in spite of it never having been dropped or even bumped.

If you decide to buy, get an extended warranty that will cover such damage should it ever happen to you.

I have both the 14" 16gb/512gb and 16" 32gb/1tb version of this laptop and I would recommend getting the 16" if you can find a good deal on it. It is an excellent laptop with great battery life, incredible screen, and decent speakers. For some reason the speakers on the 14" are just really bad. Other than that, it's a good machine.
