They want you to download an Office 365 package that is not signed by Microsoft. Super shady. This can potentially lead to compromise of your PC.
If you try to activate the key through the official Microsoft website, you will get a "Service Unavailable" error. This is essentially Microsoft's way of saying, "You're trying to use a corporate key on a consumer portal." The link you are provided contains the ID Standard2024Volume. This is a Volume License (specifically LTSC 2024), which is intended for large companies, not individuals. These versions aren't hosted on the standard consumer "setup.office.com" servers, which is why the download link hits a dead end. Microsoft has designed these specific versions to be deployed by IT administrators using a tool called the Office Deployment Tool (ODT), rather than a simple "click-to-install" button. While your key was recognized as "legitimate" in the sense that it exists in their database, the consumer website doesn't have the infrastructure to actually give you the file.
If you want to keep the key, you have to use the Office Deployment Tool. This involves downloading a utility from Microsoft, writing a small piece of code in an .xml file to tell it to grab "Standard 2024 Volume," and running a command prompt. It's a hassle and technically unsupported for home users.
Retailers often sell these "MAK" (Multiple Activation Key) codes because they are cheap to buy in bulk. However, Microsoft frequently blacklists these keys once they notice they're being used by thousands of different home IP addresses instead of a single corporate network. Even if you get it installed today, it might deactivate in three months

Your warning is still appropriate. These license keys are not legit by any stretch if legit means meets the terms and conditions of the license agreement under which they were purchased. If one's own sense of morals is "does it work?", the answer is generally yes .. for at least a while.

Here is 1 person's experience: It downloaded fine, scanned clean and installed perfectly. I actually needed some additional guidance since my Office 2021 kept reappearing. I reached out to the email provided on the order confirmation for help and got a detailed response in just a few hours. In my case, despite uninstalling Office 2021, there were some directories left behind that I had to manually delete. Once that was done, everything works as it should.
