This compact Weber chimney starter is best for smaller grills, quick cooks, and low temperature charcoal setups. It fits the Weber Go Anywhere for storage, works well on a Smokey Joe, and can be used on a 22 inch kettle when you do not need a full load. The starter is praised for making charcoal grilling easier, avoiding lighter fluid smell, and holding up well over years of use. The main limitation is size, since it holds about half a full chimney and may feel too small for standard kettles or longer cooks.

Common Questions (5)

  • It is smaller than a full-size chimney and holds about half a load, so it can feel too small for a standard 22-inch kettle if you want a full bed of coals. It works well for smaller grills like the Smokey Joe, low-temp cooks on a 22-inch kettle, or quick cooks where you can add more coals later.

  • Yes. It is designed to light charcoal without lighter fluid, which avoids chemical smell or taste and can be just as fast or faster than fluid-based lighting.

  • It can hold up for years of regular use, with reports of units still looking good after three years and still working after 15+ years even when rusty. One long-used regular-size Weber chimney lasted 13 years before falling apart.

  • Yes, this compact version was made to fit inside the Weber Go-Anywhere grill for storage. It can also fit inside the grill if the grate is cut into two pieces.

  • Use it on top of the main grate with plenty of open airflow, because it needs chimney-like ventilation to keep the coals burning. If airflow is restricted, the coals can go out before they are ready.

This is the way. I've had mine since grilling became my pandemic lockdown hobby. Rained on. Tossed around. Kids stepped on it. Still going strong. Pro tip: make sure you're using it on top of the main grate. High flow of open air needed (like an actual chimney) or it won't get enough air to work. Coals will not stay lit—you will be upset and cry. You..not me... I'm a man!
I've never had an issue putting the larger Weber chimney on the charcoal grate down inside my 22" kettle, with the lower vent wide open. Maybe the smaller ones (chimney and/or grill) are more finicky though.

Mine still looks good and I've had it for three years. If you have a Weber Go Anywhere grill it fits inside if you cut the grate in two pieces.
The go anywhere's sold for the last couple years now have been updated and the grill grates are in 2 parts by default now. It is a really nice improvement.

Is this really small for a weber 22/ sear steaks?
I would get the normal size, but this would work.

It's a lot smaller than I expected
This is the "compact" version as stated in the title. It was made for the Weber go anywhere grill and fits inside to store. There is a normal size for bigger grills.

This would be perfect for quick cooks like burgers or hotdogs. You can always add more coals on top of the pile after you dump it out if you are doing a larger cook or need to control your temp for a longer time.
Add unlit coals UNDER the lit coals for an even longer burn. Can even buffer with soaked wood chips to add smoke and get the max cooking time.

I've had mine (full-size one) for nearly 20 years. Just used it again last Saturday. I also like the electric starters. Great when near the house as you don't have burning newspaper flying all over.

Yeah, that's my experience as well (with the larger one). Never had an issue with it going out on the lower grates of my 22" kettle. I also use it for my large BGE and Santa Maria Style grills. Once lit, it does great. I generally use a grocery store paper bag as the tinder.

Yes, you can add more coals, but then you are taking way longer to heat things up and risking some bad smoke if you don't use high end/premium all natural charcoal.

Unless you have a small grill, this is way too small for most people. Its half the size you need for a standard Weber kettle.

Well these things are great but, require newspaper to start the coals. Where can I find free newspaper?

Save greasy napkins/paper towels in an old disposable wipes container. Works great and its recycling. Otherwise starter squares work great, you can use half of one and it will get one of these going pretty quick.

You can also use a paper towel with a little bit of cooking oil on it to light it up.
