Be aware this is the first of like 15 or something games that are all tied together in a huge MCU-like story. This is NOT Final Fantasy where the games are each separate and just have Chocobos in common. This series is one huge arc of a plot (with mini arcs within). This game itself ends on a pretty massive cliffhanger, resolved in the remake of SC that comes out September 2026. (Or the original Pixel version is already out obviously - the stories are unchanged for these remakes.) Also interesting mix of light-hearted stuff with some rather dark material.
Gameplay: JRPG with hybrid action and turn-based combat
- Note: not your typical brooding god-killing JRPG. Lead character is famous in the community as one of the best characters ever - Bestelle!
Core: story-driven but highly focused on characters and world-building. You will get the most out of the game by talking to NPCs and getting to know each city.
Long-term: this is 1st game of a series that continues to build on the world. Some might say the best world building ever done in video games. Don't let that turn you off - there are great stopping points if you feel pleased with where the story of that game ends.
