DO NOT buy this over a M5 Air base model at $950 IMHO ($850 open box at BestBuy) 16gb/512SSD worth the higher price for newer faster CPU/GPU and 512SSD
If youre a super low basic user and don't use a lot of storage this M4 is a good/decent deal. after MacOS is fully installed it usually takes up 30+GB on the 256 SSD and you only have a little over 200GB free on the SSD.
My $0.02
Waiting for something might not be the best move. Especially if it's from a company that does NOT telegraph their upcoming releases until they deem it fit to announce. So "maybe" it has oled, "maybe" it has touchscreen -- or maybe not. There's absolutely, genuinely zero guarantee of anything.
Get what you need, when you need it.

The 13 inch M4 MacBook Air at $700 stands out as a strong value for everyday use, especially for portability, battery life, and general school, office, web, and travel tasks. It is described as compact, fast enough for light photo work and even some 4K video editing, with Costco adding warranty coverage and a lower price than Apple or open box alternatives. The main tradeoff is the 256GB SSD, which can fill quickly once macOS and apps are installed, making 512GB more appealing for larger photo, music, or offline media libraries. It is a solid fit if you want a light Mac and can live with modest storage.
The $700 M4 Air can work well for basic users who stream media and rely on cloud storage for music and videos.
The compact Air form factor can make daily use easier while still handling raw photo editing and 4K video editing workloads.
Costco purchasing can add value through an included extended warranty compared with buying directly from Apple.
The Costco app can help locate nearby warehouse inventory and sometimes complete an order even when the website shows out of stock.
The 256GB SSD can feel limiting because macOS installation can take 30+GB, leaving only a little over 200GB free.
Inventory and pricing can vary by location, and the Costco app price may differ from the in-store floor marker until checkout rings it up.
Sustained heavy workloads can trigger throttling on the fanless Air, which can reduce performance and may shorten component lifespan due to heat.
Upgrading storage later can be inconvenient because adding capacity typically requires external SSD use or replacing the laptop.

Have others heard rumors that macbook airs will be 120hz in 1-2 generations? Also, there are rumors that macbook pros may be coming with OLED later this year with M6 pro/max series. Possibly including touchscreen!
Thoughts from others?
The M1 Pro is a better SOC for sure. but I'm not a crazy power user and the M5 is plenty for me. Its the tradeoff I'm willing to accept.
Screen difference isn't as bad TBH. Yes the 120hz is nicer for sure. But its not a crazy deal breaker. I also use my laptop in VERY low-light environment and if its actually pitch black, the 16" oled screen has a bloom haze glow that hurts my eyes. The LCD on the 15" air is actually easier on (my) eyes so its a win-win. It just fits more of my personal preferences.
The size and weight was a big deal. I had a 15" air as my daily laptop since december and just picked up the M1 Pro 16 a few weeks ago. Its a huge difference when you use them daily in your hands carrying it around.
The macbook air 15" is really a huge feat of innovation IMO (the 13" as well but I need a bigger screen)
To each their own. 😎
My monitor is a built-in USB-C dock so I have all my peripherials connected to it when im at my desk. If I ever need connections they're always with me. It really fits my use-case/lifestyle.
TBH I wouldn't want another 16" pro. even if I could find a deal on a M5 Max machine, I'd pass or at the very least, sell it and just max out a Macbook air 15". for me its just not worth the hassle of lugging around such a big powerful machine I'm not going to fully utilize.
now having said that, if the rumored Macbook ultra 16" is a slimmer lighter more powerful version of the macbook pro? I'd seriously reconsider. but then again its going to be expensive and overpowered for my uses.
If you're using it casually, you probably won't see any issues. But if you use it for an extended period of time under heavy load, you'll immediately have it throttle to a much slower speed -- and you'll shorten the lifespan of the components. Heat is one of the primary causes of premature component failure.

Where is that deal?
It's about $400 more than the equivalent "apples to apples" (pun intended 🤣) Macbook Air. Now...that's not nothing, but I think it's worth it.
Looking at CPU benchmarks, the Pro is around 20% faster.
That's using the EXACT same CPU as the M5 Air. That's how much of a difference a fan actually makes.
(There are also youtube videos showing folks modding the Neo with obnoxiously and impractically large heatsinks + fans to a similar effect of 20-40%+ performance increases. Whenever I hear "passive cooling", I roll my eyes. It's not such a great thing the marketing material makes it out to be.)
For that $400 going from the Air to the Pro, you also get an AMAZINGLY nice screen -- that in itself is pretty much worth the cost of entry.
You also get better speakers, microphone, and webcam. And you get more ports.
The Base M5 "Macbook Pro" is arguably one of the sleeper deals in the Mac lineup.
Also the M6 Pro/Max will not be OLED. That is reserved only for the M6 Ultra series, a new design most likely starting at around $3k USD. So a completely different price class.
"Better Deal" can mean, literally, anything. Maybe you think the only Macbook worth buying is one with a backlit keyboard, for example. It's a meaningless phrase.

I'll help: Apple fully controls every single spec on that device. It will slow down the machine anytime the device gets near Apple's top heat specs - before damage takes place. If it ever cannot do that, it will shut down the machine. The protection built into modern CPUs is very, very good.
I don't disagree that the Neo throttles - that's absolutely what it will do, and very quickly too (and the Air as well). There are several results showing (Neo in particular) hitting a brick wall once about 60 seconds of 100% CPU usage is reached.
But there are many workflows that will never get anywhere near that point....

The difference in cost between an extra 8GB of RAM, a backlit keyboard and a MUCH better processor is a good bit more than $200; as such, the $700 M4 MBA is a better overall deal, dollar for dollar, than the $500 Nano. It's really not complicated and I'm not sure why we are continuing this debate.
