The 13 inch M4 MacBook Air at $700 stands out as a strong value for everyday use, especially for portability, battery life, and general school, office, web, and travel tasks. It is described as compact, fast enough for light photo work and even some 4K video editing, with Costco adding warranty coverage and a lower price than Apple or open box alternatives. The main tradeoff is the 256GB SSD, which can fill quickly once macOS and apps are installed, making 512GB more appealing for larger photo, music, or offline media libraries. It is a solid fit if you want a light Mac and can live with modest storage.

I don't work for apple -- if you need that sort of detailed engineering information, I'd suggest you reach out to Apple Support (thought I doubt they'd freely disclose such details).
In other words, you have no data and no basis for your earlier statement.

It depends on what you need. For web browsing, YouTube/Netflix, and basic document work, this model is more than enough — and it's sufficient for most non-programming tasks as well.If you want better speakers, plan to do some video editing, or need it for programming, I'd recommend going with the Pro. There are a lot of good deals on the 14-inch Pro (512GB / 16GB) right now. For example, Micro Center has it for around $1,300.If you need more storage, you can spend about $200 more and get the M5 Air with upgraded storage for around $950.Personally, I prefer the Air because of the portability compared to the Pro. But the Pro's speakers are amazing as a noting point.I dont fan a touchscreen laptop as as many people stated in earlier case, I can use ipad. But now Ipad with M processors is not cheap no more.... I can just get this mac instead.
Apple's got a pretty effective market segmentation going here:

1. Macbook Neo - $500 - for those who don't require burst usage > 60s (or accept the resulting slowdown) - ie those that don't professionally do batch jobs and such for long periods of time, who are focused on mail/web/Excel/Powerpoint/Word and other apps that tend to rely on user input before stressing the CPU. Cheaper, simpler 'parts' that many won't even notice as being simpler (example: only 2 USBC, 1 limited to 480mbps).

2. MacBook Air - $950 (or $700 for last year's model) - For those who want a step up from the Neo and are willing to pay for it - higher CPU benchmarks, more performance, more features, Thunderbolt, but being fanless too, performance drops as well (but not as much as the Neo) when running batch jobs/tasks > 60 seconds - 120 seconds.

3. MacBook Pro - $1400++ - Best performance, fan included, far less (nearly none except: 14" Max CPU) throttling - most features, best screen, camera, keyboard, trackpad, audio, ports, etc. -- but you'll pay a premium. Great if you make money on your Mac or simply have the $ to spend, else overkill for many.

Well it's more expensive at Apple directly even with an id.me discount. And Costco includes two years warranty.
Note how I didn't list Apple among the stores you could buy from for $949 (though you could buy from them for $989 - they price match up to 10% of the price difference). Good mention of the warranty, though - I forgot about that.

by your completely subjective measure, you think $200 is worth 8GB of RAM and a better processor and a backlit keyboard.
No. Each one of those components has an objective cost (a little hard to calculate with Apple, given you can't upgrade your own MacBook, but that's beside the point). Once again, it's got nothing to do with my thoughts or feelings.

What if someone sees no value in any of that, and the $499 Neo does everything they need? Then what?
Then they buy what they need. I'm not sure what is tripping you up here.

That's not how the world values things. Anyway, you have your definition of how you value things, the rest of the world has a different definition. YMMV. If "objective price" (as you're using the term) mattered, anytime there was a good discount on something, everyone would flock to only that over all other product offerings, even if the discounted item offered features of no value to them (as I've clearly illustrated with you); that's not how the world works.

Google "conjoint analysis" and get back to me.

No, they would not and nothing I said would imply that I believe they would. The only situation in which they'd do this is if they were after the absolute best deal, irrespective of whether or not the best deal was good for them. Corolla vs. Lexus again. Which is what I've been trying, to zero effect, to explain to you and one other poster here.

Doesn't negate a thing I said. You have your value, others have other values. There's no point in buying what one doesn't need.

You absolutely did with your focus on objective cost over utility and requirements.

If you say so. I would say that if you still don't understand what I was getting at, your reading comprehension skills could use a tune-up, but what do I know.

No data for heat being detrimental to components?

No data for these Apple laptops getting so hot, they need to thermally throttle down so they don't cook themselves. If you run things at 100% max tolerances, you'll hasten failure. Otherwise, you're leaving performance on the table. Can't have it both ways.

Oof. Neo owners must be mad.
we returned my wife's Neo and we got the $950 M5 Air instead. I think the Neo only makes sense if you don't care about touchid/storage, and can get the base model for under $500.

The Neo is basically performance competitive with an M1 Air from 5 years ago. Which suggests to me than an M5 Air will outlast the Neo by at least 5 years.

With all other Mac's starting at 16GB minimum, the 8GB ram in the Neo is going to become a bottleneck real soon.
