definitely buy this over a Macbook NEO
DO NOT buy this over a M5 Air base model at $950 IMHO ($850 open box at BestBuy) 16gb/512SSD worth the higher price for newer faster CPU/GPU and 512SSD
If youre a super low basic user and don't use a lot of storage this M4 is a good/decent deal. after MacOS is fully installed it usually takes up 30+GB on the 256 SSD and you only have a little over 200GB free on the SSD.

But also remember, the old adage of "waiting if you can" no longer applies with our current economy. In the span of less than a year, we've seen component prices double, triple, or more in some cases.

Waiting for something might not be the best move. Especially if it's from a company that does NOT telegraph their upcoming releases until they deem it fit to announce. So "maybe" it has oled, "maybe" it has touchscreen -- or maybe not. There's absolutely, genuinely zero guarantee of anything.

Get what you need, when you need it.

Community Reviews

The 13 inch M4 MacBook Air at $700 stands out as a strong value for everyday use, especially for portability, battery life, and general school, office, web, and travel tasks. It is described as compact, fast enough for light photo work and even some 4K video editing, with Costco adding warranty coverage and a lower price than Apple or open box alternatives. The main tradeoff is the 256GB SSD, which can fill quickly once macOS and apps are installed, making 512GB more appealing for larger photo, music, or offline media libraries. It is a solid fit if you want a light Mac and can live with modest storage.

Storage alone is a big deal for some people and for only $150 more + 1 more year of MacOS update (usually) it might be worth it.
At $250 its a pick'em.
Like I stated, for a basic user this M4 plenty. I've been on MacOS for 5+ years now and just my music + photos alone take up close to 80GB on my hard drive. not including all the apps I have.
For those who stream media won't need to worry much about the SSD so 256 for them should be perfectly fine.
There's little to no more room to add my TV shows and movies. With TV shows and movies I'm already in the 400GB+ (but that's just me).
If you ever get to a point where you need more SSD space, its a PITA since its either external SSD or buy a new laptop alltogether.
If your storing original quality photos, videos, TV shows/Movies your use case is perfect for a cheap NAS.

I'm more old school and travel with my media on-device.
Sometimes I travel, coffee shops, library, hotels, air planes, etc.
I absoloutely avoid ads + commercials whenever possible. I know the new digital landscape is streaming and NAS etc.
I'm too cheap to pay for in-flight internet.
I'll just load up some movies and tv shows before every trip. put some of my pictures on a cheap thumbdrive or SD card to make more SSD room if I need it.
I know that I've never exceeded 1tb of storage. At 512gb I have to be very selective of what I keep on-device and what I keep on external storage.
I appreciate the advice, I'll definitely take it into consideration.

Very good machine. I even managed to run "Qwen 2.5 Coder 7B" llm model on it for coding. Very light and probably the best laptop if you travel a lot, or work with monitor connected. If you don't use external monitor, than 15" model might be better.
I think 256gb storage is sufficient. You should store most of your staff on the iCloud or external drive anyway (for back up reasons)
