Solar has an even dimmer screen for marginal benefit. They dropped solar on the new one. I'd personally snatch this up before they run out of the x40 models. It's all a downgrade from here.

I have the 580, which is this with a touch screen. I do enjoy having the information these provide on my bars without endangering my phone. I almost wish I didn't have the touch screen due to dripping sweat causing unwanted inputs (you can lock the screen). This is more than good enough for less.

I just bought this model 6 months ago and compared to my other basic Magene model without GPS maps, it's a whole new world. I haven't had any problems with disconnecting or losing rides, routing and importing/exporting with Strava is fast and easy, I love how all my local climbs are profiled, battery is way more than I need, slightly more compact size is what I prefer, and all my sensors (including ones from AliExpress) connect with no problem. I recommend it! Oh, and I prefer the buttons over touchscreen because I ride in the rain, spill my water bottle and drip sweat- I feel like I want to avoid potential screen swiping issues or problems. Buttons are more reliable to me.

I have been using an old Tracfone that I downloaded an app called BIKEOMETER.

Uses GPS to record your ride. Measures speed, distance, altitude, max and average speed.

I crosscheck it with a speedometer that uses tire rotation for speed and distance and they match up pretty good.

If you have an old smart phone in a drawer, this is a Free option.

Honest, question for the bikers. I just picked up biking and do about 20 miles twice a week on my shitty hybrid bike. I use Strava to track my rides. What would this provide me that Strava can not? Thank you in advance.

Honestly you don't need this. This lets you see ride statistics and metrics _during_ your ride. It mounts on your handlebars much more securely than a phone. Most important for me are stats like heart rate, speed, and distance. It also provides good navigation functionality, at least given the small size.

I've been in the Garmin ecosystem for a long time, and have been using a 540 for about a year now, mostly on MTB rides. Very recommended for people in the market for a dedicated head unit, it's a reliable device.

Casual riders pick these up to not drain their phone batteries on longer rides, along with being more compact on the handle bars. For most people a smart phone will do, but if you're going on 4-6 rides per week putting down hundreds of miles in a season, it's much more convenient to have a dedicated device that is purpose built for riding.I personally have one for use with the taillight radar, and I go on occasional long treks outside of consistent cell service areas so the offline maps are great to have. I used to mount my phone but after 2 hours on a ride in summer it was always cooking even with the screen off.

I've been looking at the 540. I really like that Garmin allows for self built apps, so I'm intrigued by some for rowing that even integrate varia radar data for dodging obstructions. Has anyone used added apps through Garmin ConnectIQ? How reliably could I use my apple watch to provide HR data? I've seen input of using other iphone apps to broadcast the AW HR by Bluetooth, but seems kind of mixed whether it works or not. Lastly, is 16GB memory ever an issue?

You mean the 850 I think.

Navigation is pretty annoying with only the buttons, wish I got the 840 instead. To get to some features you need to long press on some buttons.

Didn't know you could install apps on the bike computer. I've done it with the watches, but not the bike computer.
