The Garmin Edge 540 is a compact dedicated cycling computer that stands out for ride metrics, navigation, and offline maps without draining a phone battery. It mounts securely on the bars, connects sensors reliably, and handles Strava imports and exports quickly. Battery life is described as more than enough, and the smaller size is a plus for long rides and mountain biking. The main tradeoff is button based navigation, which can be awkward compared with touchscreen models, especially for map browsing. Solar and touchscreen extras are treated as optional rather than essential.
Riders who train in rain or sweat, because the button controls avoid accidental touchscreen inputs and can be locked quickly when conditions change.
Apple Watch riders who want seamless native pairing, because using it with this computer can require a third-party app that may be buggy after updates.
Button navigation can be awkward for some features, and some functions require long-pressing buttons. The touchscreen models are easier for map browsing, but the 540's buttons are still usable and can be locked quickly when sweat or rain is an issue.
Yes. It mounts securely on the handlebars, shows ride stats like heart rate, speed, and distance during the ride, and provides offline maps and navigation without draining your phone battery. It is especially useful on longer rides or in areas with weak cell service.
The solar model has a dimmer screen for only a marginal benefit, and Garmin reportedly dropped solar on the newer model. The non-solar Edge 540 is the safer buy if you want the brighter display and are trying to get an x40 model before stock runs out.
Yes. It connects reliably to sensors, including AliExpress units, and users report no problems with disconnecting or losing rides. It also supports sensor pairing for heart rate, cadence, and speed accessories.
That I can't say for sure. I normally connect with a bike computers. These are all Bluetooth or ANT+ so I wouldn't think there would be a problem.
Apple locks their ecosystem down and punishes users for trying to use it with anything non-Apple. That is the case here with trying to use an Apple watch. There is a third party app, which will require you to have an iphone with you on the ride, that makes it work but it's prone to being buggy and break with regular system updates.

I always used Strava to record my rides and workouts. You can pair sensors in Strava and sync all the data to Apple Health or whatever other app or software for the most part. But yes, natively, Apple is frustrating in that they don't play well or offer connection options.
I have tried heart rate monitors, cadence, and speed sensors from Magene, Coospo, and Xoss. Of those, Coospo was just slightly less reliable with the HRM which died after about 5,000 miles. I am using Xoss speed and cadence now and they are working fine except I wish I would have picked the newer thinner models- clearance between crank arm and chainstay is tight. Of all three, I would recommend Magene for all sensors. If you can afford it, the mid or higher end HRM is a really good buy (don't have the model numbers handy I can edit them in later). I've only had problems with the Coospo for a combined 14,000 miles of mixed usage. For the price savings compared the Garmin sensors, I could just buy a replacement and still be ahead.
I ended up getting the 840 and ordered the upgraded versions of the Magene sensors and HRM. Thanks for the recommendations!
